Recently, most news websites, including ours,<\/a><\/noindex>, reported that at the Intel Developer Conference 2019 held in Tokyo, Intel representatives promised support for hardware ray tracing in the upcoming discrete accelerator Xe. However, this turned out to be false. As later commented by Intel, all such statements are based on erroneous machine translations of materials from Japanese sources.<\/p>\n

An Intel representative contacted PCWorld yesterday and told them in a detailed comment that no statements about hardware ray tracing support in the Intel Xe graphics accelerator were made at the Tokyo event. Moreover, in the presentation where the media thought such promises were made, there was actually no mention of ray tracing at all. <\/p>\n

The misunderstanding arose because reviewers attempted to translate a Japanese news article from MyNavi.jp, which discussed a graphical presentation by Intel. As a result of machine translation, the site's assumptions about the graphical capabilities of the fighting game Tekken 7 somehow transformed into a promise of ray tracing in future Intel accelerators. However, as later commented by an Intel representative, this is a grand misunderstanding. The mentioned presentation did not mention ray tracing and was not related to either the discrete graphics architecture Intel Xe or the integrated accelerator Gen12 from future Tiger Lake processors. Moreover, the statements regarding the target performance of Intel Xe graphics (60 fps at Full HD resolution) were also a translation error.<\/p>\n

However, this does not mean that Intel categorically denies the intention to implement hardware ray tracing support in its graphics. The company simply denies that it officially promised it, but it is possible that the time for such statements has not yet come. In other words, Intel wants to convey to the public that it is still too early to talk about any specific features of the company's future discrete GPU. We will find out what it will be like a bit later.<\/p>\n

By the way, this is not the first occurrence of such a mix-up regarding incorrect translations of statements about Intel Xe.
