Hybrid ray tracing visualization is becoming one of the key promising technologies in computer games (and one of the features of next-generation consoles in 2020). However, at present, these effects require NVIDIA graphics cards with hardware support for RTX. But, as we mentioned earlier,<\/a><\/noindex>the creators of World of Tanks have showcased ray tracing effects in their popular multiplayer game, which work with any DirectX 11 class graphics cards, including those from AMD.<\/p>\n

Now, Wargaming has released the World of Tanks enCore RT demo (available for download) on the official website<\/a><\/noindex>), allowing owners of graphics cards without RTX support to test ray tracing in the game, albeit with some caveats. Instead of offering the full range of effects found in some DirectX 12 games with DXR, ray tracing in this case is limited to enhancing shadow quality. The developers also provided a video with a detailed explanation of the technology:<\/p>\n

The main advantage of the upcoming Core engine update is the support for qualitatively new, softer, and more realistic shadows. This will be made possible by ray tracing technology. New shadows will appear on all 'living' game vehicles (excluding destroyed ones) that are illuminated by sunlight. The fact is that this technology is resource-intensive, so its application was limited to specific vehicles.<\/p>\n

Ray tracing in WoT utilizes the Intel open-source library Embree (part of Intel One API), a set of high-performance cores designed to provide a range of ray tracing effects. Wargaming has so far limited itself to shadows, but may implement other effects in the future.<\/p>\n
