Engineers and testing analysts, DevOps, systems engineers (virtualization and cloud solutions), Program Managers, machine learning specialists, and Big Data experts are also in demand. The demand for these professions has been steadily growing over the last five years. A similar situation exists in countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

Is European education mandatory?

European education is definitely not mandatory. The requirement for higher education depends on the country.

To obtain a British visa <noindex>Tier 2 (General)</noindex> having a diploma in the specialty is not a mandatory requirement.

However, for example, the situation is different in Germany. If considering obtaining a<noindex> Blue Card</noindex>, a diploma in higher education is necessary for this visa. The diploma must be listed in the<noindex> Anabin</noindex>database. Both the candidate and it would be better if they mention it during the interview can check the presence of their university in this database. If your university is not in the Anabin database, it needs to be verified by the<noindex> ZAB</noindex> — Central Office for Foreign Education.

Speaking of the local German work permit, it is possible to live and work in Germany without higher education, but it takes much longer and is riskier. Numerous checks will be necessary here. We currently have such a case in progress. During the processing of the work visa, recommendation letters and proof of a close connection between previous experience and the position the client is applying for were required.

Not all companies are aware that this option is possible. Therefore, during consultations, I always emphasize that candidates need to know everything about work visas themselves and, if necessary, advise the employer that this is possible and which documents need to be gathered. Cases where the candidate takes care of their own work permit are quite common, especially in Germany.

Photo by Felipe Furtado on Unsplash

What is more important — work experience or specific skills? And if skills, then which ones?

What matters is not how many years you have worked, but the relevance of your experience. We have many clients who change their field and acquire education in completely different areas, such as logistics → project management, networking technologies → data analysis, development → application design. In such cases, even project experience from a thesis or internship becomes very relevant and more suitable for your profile than, for example, managerial experience from 5 years ago.

Hard skills for tech specialists are undoubtedly important, but typically at the level of specialization. Job postings often list a mix of technologies, meaning it's not 5 years in C++, but rather experience with several technologies: C++, Erlang, Kernel Development (Unix/Linux/Win), Scala, etc.

Soft skills are critically important. This includes understanding cultural codes, the ability to communicate appropriately, solve problems, and find common ground on work issues. All of this is evaluated during the interview stage. However, simply 'chatting about life' is not an option. The interview process has certain metrics embedded, based on which the candidate is assessed. We help with understanding these laws and learning to play by the employers' rules.

Elmira, tell me honestly, is it necessary to know English to work in England?

Technical IT specialists usually have at least basic knowledge of English at a technical level—almost all work is related to English (instructions, code, training materials, vendor documentation, etc.). A technical level of language will be sufficient for correspondence, documentation, and attending conferences—these positions are suitable for junior and mid-level developers, systems and network engineers, data engineers, testers, mobile developers. Conversational proficiency at an intermediate level, allowing you to participate in discussions and explain your solutions and ideas, is already a senior level for the same roles. There are technical roles (regardless of whether they are Junior or Senior) where fluency in English is critical and can be a criterion for assessing the candidate—Pre-sales/Sales engineers, designers, system and business analysts, architects, Project and Product managers, customer support (Customer Success/Customer Support Manager), account managers.

Certainly, conversational English is essential for leaders: for roles such as team leader, Chief Technology Officer, Chief Operating Officer (managing IT infrastructure), or Business Development Director.

What about German / Dutch and other languages besides English?

Regarding knowledge of the local language in Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, it is not mandatory if you are proficient in English. In capital cities, there's generally no need to know the local language, but in other cities, life will be much easier if you speak the local language.

If you are planning far-reaching goals, it makes sense to learn the language. It's better to start before moving. First, you will feel more confident (when registering, searching for an apartment, etc.), and secondly, you will show the company your interest.

Age? At what age are candidates no longer considered?

From the employer's perspective: In Europe and the UK, there are laws against age discrimination — they are so strictly enforced that employers do not regard age as one of the hiring characteristics. The most important aspects are your technological outlook, expertise, portfolio, skills, and ambitions.

From your side as a candidate, it's better to move before the age of 50. Here we are talking about ease and willingness to adapt, productivity, and an adequate perception of new situations.

Photo by Adam Wilson on Unsplash

Can you tell me how relocation usually happens?

The most common scenario is that you look for a job remotely, go through interviews (first a video call, then in-person meetings), receive a job offer, negotiate terms, obtain a visa, and then relocate.

This format does not require significant financial investments and typically takes between 1 to 6 months — depending on how actively you search for a job and which country you plan to move to. We have cases of clients who went through all selection stages in 1 month and received a visa in 2 weeks (Germany). There are also cases where the visa application period stretched to 5 months (UK).

"Uncomfortable" question. Is it possible to relocate on your own without resorting to your assistance?

Of course, it's possible. It's great when a person has strong motivation, is willing to study the issue, and do everything themselves. We often receive letters like this: "I watched all your 100 videos on <noindex>the YouTube channel</noindex>, followed all the advice, found a job, and moved. How can I thank you?"

So why are we here? Our expertise serves as a tool and knowledge that a person receives to solve their specific task most effectively and quickly. One can learn to snowboard on their own, and sooner or later, they'll ride, with bumps and not immediately, but they'll ride. Alternatively, they can hire an instructor and get it right the next day, fully understanding the process. It’s about efficiency and time. Our goal is to provide people with knowledge and understanding of the job market principles in a specific country and, of course, share contacts.

Let’s talk about salaries: how much can technical specialists realistically earn in the UK?

Developer salaries in Russia and the UK differ multiple times: Software Engineer: £17,600 and £70,000, Senior Software Engineer: £19,000 and £87,000, IT Project Manager: £21,000 and £100,000 per year in Russia and the UK, respectively.

Considering taxes, the average monthly income for an IT specialist is between £3,800 and £5,500.
If you found a job paying £30,000 a year, your take-home pay would only be £2,000 per month — this may suffice for one person, but it’s not enough for a family; both partners would need to work.

However, if your salary is £65,000 (an average level for a developer or data/machine learning engineer), your take-home pay would be £3,850 — which is quite comfortable for a family.

The numbers are appealing, but one cannot solely rely on them to claim that a person's quality of life will significantly change. Let's compare net salaries in Russia and the UK with the cost of goods or services that we use every day.

I think it's fundamentally incorrect to compare these figures, and many make the mistake of comparing liters of milk, kilograms of apples, metro fares, or housing rent. Such comparisons are absolutely useless — they are different systems of coordinates.

In England and Europe, there is a progressive tax system, with taxes higher than in Russia, ranging from 30% to 55%.

A liter of milk costs the same, but if you break the screen on your iPhone 11 Pro, in Russia you will have to pay a hefty sum for repairs, while in the EU/UK it will be fixed for free. If you buy something online and change your mind, returning it in Russia will be a hassle, while in the EU/UK you won't even need a receipt. Online marketplaces like Amazon/Ebay, which deliver products on time and protect you from fraud, are incomparable to individual online stores and especially Russian post.

Commercial insurance in the EU/UK works like clockwork, and you don’t need to prove that you had the right to it. In Russia, you will be exhausted trying to prove that checking a child's ears for the 15th time in 2 years isn't a previously developed condition, even chronic conditions count as an insurance case. Teaching a child the English language (and mentality) through lessons in courses and schools or in natural environments with native speakers is important. If your child is bullied at school, in the EU/UK, parents can face criminal responsibility for such instances.

Renting a home in Europe or England often (especially for families) transforms into an opportunity to buy your own apartment (with low mortgage and loan rates) or even a house (which is quite uncommon for the average Moscow apartment dweller), living in the suburbs and commuting to London (or not commuting and working remotely).

In England, childcare for children under 3 years old costs on average £200-£600 per month. After age 3, all children receive 15 hours of preschool education per week funded by the state.

There are both private and public schools. In private schools, tuition can reach up to £50,000 a year, but there are public schools rated 'outstanding' by the oversight organization Ofsted — they offer very high-quality education and are free.

The NHS provides free state healthcare at a reasonably good level, but if you wish to have all-inclusive commercial insurance that works in all countries worldwide, it will cost £300-500 per person per month.

Photo by Aron Van de Pol on Unsplash

Well, I am almost decided to move to England. But I am a bit afraid that I will be treated like a migrant worker, that I will have to work 24 hours a day, and even going out for a coffee will be impossible.

About migrant workers: London is multicultural, with many people from various countries, so you'll find yourself in a similar situation to many around you. Thus, the concept of a migrant worker is practically non-existent. There's a fun game — count the number of foreign languages in a subway car in London. The numbers can reach up to 30, and that’s in just one car.

On overwork: Overworking is more typical for startups, and even then, only at a certain stage. Investors consider a 'crazy' work schedule a risk factor. There’s an increasing emphasis on work-life balance.

They take burnout very seriously as well. By law, in the UK, 'an employer must conduct a risk assessment regarding work-related stress and take measures to prevent work-related illnesses associated with stress.' Burnout officially has the status of an illness in the UK, and if symptoms appear, you go to a therapist, who provides a statement that you are under stress, allowing you to take a week or more off work. There are <noindex>many government and private initiatives and organizations</noindex>, which are dedicated to caring for your mental health. So if you're tired and want to talk about it, you know where to call (and even in Russian).

I have two children, a husband, and a cat. Can I bring them with me?

Yes, if you have a spouse, they will receive <noindex>a dependant visa</noindex> with the right to work in the country. Children under 18 will also receive a dependant visa accordingly. And there are no problems with pets — the procedure for transporting pets is very clearly outlined.

I don’t want to talk about money again, but I have to. How much money do I need to save for the move?

As a rule, it’s visa expenses + £945 in your bank account for 90 days before applying for a Tier 2 visa + the cost of housing for the first 3 months + £500-1000 a month for expenses (this depends on your lifestyle — some can live on £30 a week, cooking for themselves, biking or using a scooter, preferring to buy tickets for flights or concerts in advance (yes, even for such money you can fly to Europe and enjoy festivals), while others eat at restaurants, travel by car or taxi, buy new things, and purchase tickets a couple of days before flying).

Thanks to Elmira for the interview.
