\nAt Variti, we specialize in traffic filtering, which means we develop protection against bots and DDoS attacks for online stores, banks, media, and more. Some time ago, we considered providing limited functionality of the service to users of various marketplaces. This solution was intended to attract small companies whose operations are not heavily reliant on online presence and who cannot or do not want to pay for protection against all types of bot attacks.<\/p>\n

Marketplace Selection<\/h4>\n

\nInitially, we chose Plesk<\/a><\/noindex>, where we uploaded the application to combat DDoS attacks. Among the most popular applications on Plesk are WordPress, Joomla, and Kaspersky antivirus. Our extension not only filters traffic but also shows website statistics, allowing users to track traffic peaks and, consequently, attacks.
\nAfter a while, we developed a simpler application, this time for CloudFlare<\/a><\/noindex>. The application analyzes traffic and shows the share of bots on the site, as well as the ratio of users with different operating systems. The idea was that users of the marketplace could see the share of illegitimate traffic on the site and decide if they need the full version of the protection against attacks.<\/p>\n

Harsh Reality<\/h4>\n

<\/a><\/noindex>
\nInitially, we thought users would be interested in the applications, since the share of bots in global traffic has already exceeded 50%, and the issue of illegitimate users is discussed quite frequently. Our investors also believed this, stating that we should move into cloud services and seek new users in the marketplaces. However, while Plesk generates at least a small but stable income (several hundred dollars a month), CloudFlare, where we made the application free, has been disappointing. Now, several months after the release, the application has been installed by only around ten people. <\/p>\n

The problem primarily lies in the low number of views. Interestingly, in percentage terms, everything looks good: two-thirds of the people who landed on the application page installed it and started analyzing the traffic. However, it's unclear how other services on the marketplace are doing, as neither CloudFlare nor Plesk provide open counters, making it impossible to see the download numbers, let alone visits, on the pages of other extensions. <\/p>\n

It can be assumed that there are generally few users on marketplaces. A year or two ago, we spoke with an investor who invested in Plesk, and he mentioned he sold his stake in the company at the first opportunity due to unmet expectations. The investor believed that marketplaces had a bright future and that the service would take off, but that hasn't happened. Our experiments have also confirmed the false hopes. <\/p>\n

Of course, there's a chance that if we start working with application traffic and attract new clients through marketing, interest in extensions will grow, and revenues will become more significant. However, it's clear that without significant efforts, no magic will happen, and these services won't operate fully. Although when we tell someone about the applications, everyone agrees that the idea is interesting and useful. <\/p>\n

Perhaps the issue lies in the specifics of our service: we compete with CloudFlare, and it's possible that the company doesn't allow similar services to grow in visibility. It may also be due to high competition: everyone is saying that we need to go into marketplaces, and due to the large number of other extensions available, users can't find us specifically.<\/p>\n

What's Next<\/h4>\n

\nCurrently, we are considering updating the application's functionality and granting CloudFlare clients access not only to analytics but also to bot protection. However, given the current situation, this seems somewhat pointless. For now, we've concluded that the efficiency of the marketplace was a test of the hypothesis of whether the extension would succeed without additional promotion on our part \u2014 and it turns out it did not. Now we need to figure out how to attract users there, and whether additional traffic will be beneficial, or if it's simpler to abandon such platforms.
