And not just that.<br \/>\n<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"habracut\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"Intro\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<h3>1. A Bit of Background<\/h3>\n<p>\n <b class=\"spoiler_title\">An Optional Part<\/b>My previous router was TP-Link TL-WR941ND with hardware version 3.6 (<i>4MB Flash and 32MB RAM<\/i>). The standard firmware periodically froze for no reason regardless of the versions (<i>I updated it a couple of times, the last update for my hardware came out at the end of 2012<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Frustrated with the native firmware, I flashed <i><b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gargoyle-router.com\">Gargoyle<\/a><\/noindex><\/b><\/i> (<i>if I remember correctly, version 1.8; the firmware is based on OpenWRT, for those who are not familiar<\/i>) and finally the router started working as it should.<\/p>\n<p>The WR941 had decent hardware for my needs at the time of purchase (<i>which was about 10 years ago<\/i>), but now I found its performance insufficient. All ports are 100 Mbps, the maximum Wi-Fi speed is 300 Mbps. This might still be adequate for internet use, but transferring files over the local network between devices is quite slow. There's also not enough built-in Flash memory even for localization of the firmware (<i>even replacing files through WinSCP, I tried somehow<\/i>), let alone installing more resource-intensive plugins (<i>of course, you can expand memory, install firmware for increased memory capacity, but I lack the direct skills for re-soldering memory chips<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>However, even all of the above probably wouldn\u2019t have forced me to change routers soon. It was just that at the beginning of September this year, I bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 to replace the untimely deceased Redmi Note 4 (<i>after 2 years of exemplary service<\/i>) and it turned out that RN5 and WR941 are mutually incompatible \u2014 RN5 wouldn't reconnect after being disconnected from the wireless network created by WR941 (and this is not an isolated issue, as I found out a bit later while reading <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/4pda.ru\/forum\/index.php?showtopic=962423&amp;view=findpost&amp;p=76501881\">the topic on 4PDA<\/a><\/noindex>).<\/p>\n<p>In general, the need to change the router has arisen. Why choose this one specifically? I was interested in its internals (<i>I read about it just a year ago on SmallNetBuilder<\/i>) and capabilities (<i>although it's unlikely that even half of them will be used in the near future<\/i>). But even that wasn't the deciding factor in choosing the Phicomm K3C (<i>I was also considering the Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 3G<\/i>), but the affordable price (<i>I bought it for $32 at the exchange rate<\/i>) with decent internals and the ability to replace the stock firmware with a full version of OpenWRT. The router comes with a stripped-down version of OpenWRT from the manufacturer (<i>I read somewhere that a spy was added to it, but I didn't find any details<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>The OpenWRT modification for the Phicomm K3C (<i>OpenWRT officially does not support the Intel WAV500 chipset<\/i>) was created by a Chinese user with the nickname <i><b>Paldier<\/b><\/i> (<i>his <b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/paldier\">GitHub<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> and <b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/k3c.paldier.com\/openwrt\/\">page with firmware files<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> for this router, <b><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/forum.openwrt.org\/t\/phicomm-k3c-router\/9864\">the router topic<\/a><\/noindex><\/b> on the OpenWRT forum<\/i>). He also made a firmware port for Asus Merlin for K3C (<i>since its installation requires replacing RAM from 256MB to 512MB, we will not consider it<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"#Top\">\u2191 <i>Back to top<\/i><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"Specifications\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<h3>2. OpenWRT firmware<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Connect the router to a computer\/laptop via the LAN port (<i>any of the three<\/i>) and to the internet via WAN (<i>as we need to download the firmware, which is slightly over 30MB<\/i>).\n <\/li>\n<li>Find out the router's local network address (<i>we'll need it later, usually it is <b>192.168.2.1<\/b><\/i>).\n <\/li>\n<li>Run the previously downloaded utility <i><b>RoutAckPro<\/b><\/i> (<i>600KB in size and a lot of Chinese text inside; I'm not sure where it's best to upload it, but it can be downloaded from <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/4pda.ru\/forum\/index.php?showtopic=956501&amp;view=findpost&amp;p=87802919\">the 4PDA forum<\/a><\/noindex> after registering on it<\/i>). If the address is different from the one mentioned above, enter it in the IP form. Click the <i><b>Telnet<\/b><\/i>button. If everything is done correctly, the message <b>\u6253\u5f00Telnet\u5b8c\u6210<\/b>will appear in the window. Now the utility can be closed, meaning we've prepared the router for firmware change via Telnet.\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habrastorage.org\/webt\/zq\/lo\/4a\/zqlo4awmsxs-aofmj9_usdln7vk.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Enhancing the Phicomm K3C Wi-Fi Router\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/88446783a4bdeee992dcb0431a46ecd5.jpg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><br \/>\n <i>RoutAckPro window<\/i>\n <\/li>\n<li>Using the PuTTY program (<i>Smartty or another similar one<\/i>) connect to the router via Telnet (<i>the IP is the same as for RoutAckPro, port \u2014 23<\/i>).\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habrastorage.org\/webt\/wr\/js\/fj\/wrjsfjvi5huggvxeo4-ceeils6o.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Enhancing the Phicomm K3C Wi-Fi Router\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/5dc2d0ca11406bad8bcb8056ca10b279.jpg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><br \/>\n <i>PuTTY window with connection settings.<\/i>\n <\/li>\n<li>In the PuTTY console, enter the command to navigate to the tmp directory:\n<pre><code class=\"plaintext\">cd \/tmp<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>\n <\/li>\n<li>Determine which firmware we need to download (<i>the hardware version is printed on a sticker attached to the bottom of the router, in my case it says &#171;<b>H\/W C1<\/b>&#171;, which means I need firmware for <b>C1<\/b><\/i>).\n <\/li>\n<li>Choose the required version of the file on <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/k3c.paldier.com\/openwrt\/\">the Paldier website<\/a><\/noindex> fullimage.img <i><b>. For me, this is<\/b><\/i>So, in the PuTTY console, type the following:\n<pre>http:\/\/k3c.paldier.com\/openwrt\/C1\/fullimage.img<\/pre>\n<p>\n wget http:\/\/k3c.paldier.com\/openwrt\/C1\/fullimage.img<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"plaintext\">Then type the command<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>\n <\/li>\n<li>and wait for the message of successful flashing.\n<pre><code class=\"plaintext\">\/usr\/sbin\/upgrade \/tmp\/fullimage.img fullimage 0 1<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>\n After that, type\n <\/li>\n<li>rm -rf \/overlay\/*\n\tsync &amp;&amp; sleep 10 &amp;&amp; reboot\n<pre><code class=\"plaintext\">and wait for the router to restart (<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>\n a couple of minutes<i>). After that, you can connect to its web interface (<\/i>address<i>, password <b>192.168.2.1<\/b>, admin <b>admin<\/b><\/i>).\n <\/li>\n<li>After the first boot, it's advisable to reset (<i>using the hidden button on the router, slightly to the right of the power socket, or through the web interface<\/i>).\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habrastorage.org\/webt\/k2\/48\/fq\/k248fq2dx1vogxow1pbpww-98du.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Enhancing the Phicomm K3C Wi-Fi Router\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/3fe3b6739fa109b3bf8e92fc23d4ec92.jpg\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/a><\/noindex><br \/>\n <i>Now the router will have this interface<\/i>\n <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\n The re-flashing instructions were created by a user on the 4PDA forum <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/4pda.ru\/forum\/index.php?showuser=1362506\">WayOutt<\/a><\/noindex>, for which I am very grateful.<\/p>\n<p><b class=\"spoiler_title\">If you don't want to connect the K3C to the internet immediately and have a USB flash drive or USB card reader with a flash card.<\/b> Skip step 5, and in step 7, instead of downloading the firmware file to the router with the wget command, download it to your PC (<i>just in case you might need it later<\/i>) and copy the file to a flash drive and connect it to the router's USB port.<br \/>\n In point 8, enter the following command:<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"plaintext\">\/usr\/sbin\/upgrade \/tmp\/usb\/.run\/mountd\/sda1\/fullimage.img fullimage 0 1<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>\n The rest of the points remain unchanged.<\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"#Top\">\u2191 <i>Back to top<\/i><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<p><noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"Language\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<h3>4. But this is normal, as the LuCI in the firmware is based on OpenWRT 18.06<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, we can download these packages, save them to a flash drive, and then connect it to the router's USB port and install them through PuTTY with the command<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"plaintext\">opkg install \/tmp\/usb\/.run\/mountd\/sda1\/luci-i18n-*.ipk<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>\n *<i>All <b>ipk<\/b>-packages located at the path <b>\/tmp\/usb\/.run\/mountd\/sda1\/<\/b> and having names that start with <b>luci-i18n-<\/b>.
