The developers of XCP-ng, who are advancing a free and open-source alternative to the proprietary cloud infrastructure management platform XenServer (Citrix Hypervisor), have announced their integration into the Xen project, which is being developed under the Linux Foundation. This shift under the Xen Project will position XCP-ng as a standard distribution for deploying virtual machine infrastructure based on the Xen hypervisor and XAPI.<\/p>\n

The merger with the Xen Project will allow XCP-ng, as a distribution for end users, to act as a bridge between users and developers, ensuring that XCP-ng will continue to adhere to the original principles in the future (not turning into a limited commercial product, as happened with XenServer). The integration will not notably impact the development processes used in XCP-ng.<\/p>\n

At the same time, a beta release of XCP-ng 8.1 has been proposed for testing, which recreates the functionality of Citrix Hypervisor 8.1 (formerly known as XenServer). It supports upgrading from XenServer to XCP-ng, provides full compatibility with Xen Orchestra, and enables movement of virtual machines<\/a> between XenServer and XCP-ng and back. An installation image of 530 MB has been prepared for download.<\/p>\n

The installation images of the new release are built on a package base of CentOS 7.5 using the Linux 4.19 kernel and Xen 4.13 hypervisor. The most notable change in XCP-ng 8.1 is the stabilization of guest system boot support in UEFI mode (Secure Boot support has not been transferred as it is tied to proprietary code). Additionally, the performance of importing and exporting virtual machines
\nin XVA format has been improved, storage performance has been enhanced, new input\/output drivers for Windows have been added, support for AMD EPYC 7xx2(P) chips has been introduced, chrony has replaced ntpd, support for guest systems in PV mode has been deprecated, Ext4 is now used by default in new local storage, and the experimental module for ZFS has been updated to version 0.8.2.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that Citrix Hypervisor (XenServer) and XCP-NG allow for quick deployment of virtualization systems. servers<\/a> and workstations, offering tools for centralized management of an unlimited number of servers and virtual machines. Key features of the system include the ability to combine multiple servers into a pool (cluster), high availability support, snapshot capabilities, and resource sharing using XenMotion technology.
