Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MIT CSAIL) have developed a \"smart surface\" called RFocus, which \"can act as a mirror or lens\" to focus radio signals on desired devices.<\/p>\n

Currently, there is a specific problem with providing a stable wireless connection for miniature devices that have very little space for antennas. The RFocus smart surface could remedy this, as its experimental version increases the average signal strength by nearly 10 times while also doubling the channel's bandwidth.  <\/p>\n

Instead of several monolithic antennas, the RFocus developers utilized over 3000 miniature antennas, complemented by corresponding software, which enabled such a significant increase in signal strength. In other words, RFocus functions as a beam direction controller, placed in front of the end client devices. The project authors believe that such an array will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, as each miniature antenna costs just a few cents. It has been noted that the RFocus prototype consumes less energy compared to conventional systems. The reduction in energy consumption has been achieved by eliminating signal amplifiers from the system.<\/p>\n

The project authors believe that their system, produced in the form of \"thin wallpaper,\" could find wide applications, including in the Internet of Things (IoT) and fifth-generation (5G) communication networks, providing signal amplification to end-user devices. It is still unclear when the developers plan to bring their creation to the commercial market. Until that time, they need to refine the design of the final product to make the system as efficient and appealing to potential buyers as possible.<\/p>\n
