Now I want to expand on this idea.

The main idea: break your work into sessions in such a way that you increase the number of attempts to solve a problem. Instead of working continuously for six hours, it is often preferable to do three sessions of two hours each. Instead of three hours, it sometimes makes sense to have three one-hour sessions.

Chunks of information

To freely use new knowledge, it takes time to get accustomed to it. As we know, habits take time. In the book Learning How to Learn (or in the <noindex>wonderful course</noindex> on Coursera), chunks of information are referred to as chunks, and the course discusses how they are formed. This takes time, which practically cannot be significantly accelerated.

First, we learn what natural numbers are, then integers, then rational numbers, then real numbers. Next, we study limits, then derivatives, then integrals, then topology, then analysis on manifolds, and so on. For each subsequent step, we need to understand the previous one and perceive it as a unit of information. When I say "manifold", for me it is a unit of information, but for the learner, it is an informational googol: a Hausdorff topological space in which every point has a neighborhood that is homeomorphic, blah blah. I remember the moment when I could first say "tensor product" aloud without feeling internal discomfort. It took me a long time.
<noindex></noindex>
This is why it's so important to divide learning into sessions. Give yourself time to get used to the new material. When we read a complex concept and try to immediately manipulate it in our minds, we encounter a lack of familiarity. The great <noindex>John von Neumann</noindex> said that we do not understand mathematics, we get accustomed to it. (It's easy to believe when recalling that real numbers are often defined as equivalence classes of limits of rational numbers.)

This is one of the reasons why students are advised to attend academic seminars at the academy. Even if they don't understand anything, they become accustomed to the use of words, theorems, and even names. When a student reads in a textbook something they once heard at a seminar, they experience an internal "oh, I'm familiar with this!", making it easier to learn. Without this familiarity, new information feels alien, and we need even more time to assimilate it.

It is also worth noting the role of sleep in organizing information. When possible, it's helpful to spread sessions across different days to leverage the amazing ability of the brain to sort the knowledge acquired throughout the day during a "brief coma with hallucinations and partial body paralysis." Morning is wiser than evening!

Different people

Another reason is the ability to view the tasks from a fresh perspective. After a break, rest, distraction, or sleep, we approach the task in a slightly different state, with a new set of thoughts, and we may see what we hadn't noticed before. Surely everyone has had a moment when a simple programming task remained unsolved for hours, only to have the solution appear in their mind out of nowhere.

This is one of the reasons why it's so ineffective to work on a project the day (or night?) before the deadline. Working 8–12 hours straight on a single project, we lose the opportunity to approach it "multiple times"; our focus blurs, and we miss original solutions. Moreover, due to overall fatigue, we may make silly mistakes and fail to notice them. In general, it's better not to do it this way.

By dividing work into sessions and approaching it multiple times, we allow different aspects of ourselves to express ideas: the person we are on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... Furthermore, by working on other projects, we learn new things that can unexpectedly be applied in the next session.

For instance, if you are working on a project, then switch to reading the book "The Pragmatic Programmer", and then return to the project, you can timely correct the style and architecture while it’s still early. Conversely, reading the book will be more beneficial because you are applying its advice to a specific example.

<noindex>Archimedes' Axiom</noindex>

If you add a small number to itself many times, the sum will exceed a large number.

Another reason for the effectiveness of dividing work into sessions is the availability of small parts. The following examples may seem ridiculously simple and one might want to dismiss them due to their banality, but they are extremely effective. Probably, everyone can convince themselves that they have 5 free minutes every day. After all, one can simply wake up five minutes earlier!

A thousand-page book seems unattainable for many. However, if you read just three pages each day (10 minutes in the morning before breakfast), it will take a year to finish the book. What? That's long? Better long than never.

If you learn exactly one word in English each day and keep it in mind throughout the day (or stick a note with the word on your laptop), you will gather 365 words in a year. By my calculations, that's 365 words more than nothing.

Solve one problem, write one paragraph of text, watch one video on Coursera, do ten sit-up repetitions, and so on. Then Archimedes' axiom will do the rest for you.

Suppose you say that you don't have five minutes in the morning to read a book. Take two minutes or even one. Read the book while brushing your teeth. If we lower the bar to something ridiculously simple, the psychological discomfort will force us to complete this small portion. Better to read one page every day than to not read ten pages every day.

Applications

To make the article more applicable, I propose the following:

If you are a student and have homework in several subjects, do not allocate one day for analysis and another for algebra. It's better to dedicate half a day to analysis and half a day to algebra. Do the same on the second day. Then you’ll approach the problems twice, possible solutions will swirl in your mind during sleep, and the next day it will be easier to solve the problems.

If you are working and have several projects, manage your deadlines. By determining when each project needs to be completed and estimating the time required, you can break the work into separate sessions and alternate between different projects throughout the day, taking advantage of the aforementioned benefits. There's no need to split a day into five parts for five projects, but it's perfectly acceptable to dedicate time each day to two or three different tasks depending on the deadlines.

If you want to read a book but feel you don't have the time, you might actually have some. Place the book on your phone or next to your alarm clock before bed. When you wake up, take the book, sit away from the bed, and read three pages before starting your day. Most likely, on another day, you'll read more than three pages or return to the book one evening. But even so, don't forget to read three new pages every morning. Sooner or later, you'll finish the book.

As an exercise, try applying these recommendations to your own activities 🙂

P. S. These tips are applicable for understanding non-trivial material, organizing new concepts in your mind, and solving original problems. However, if you need to distribute flyers for six hours, it can also be done in one go.

Source: <a content="nofollow" rel="nofollow"
