The base desktop environment is built on GNUstep, but users have the option to install WindowMaker, GNOME, Xfce, or Lumina. Unlike other desktop builds of FreeBSD, MidnightBSD was originally developed as a fork of FreeBSD 6.1-beta, which was synchronized with the FreeBSD 7 codebase in 2011, and subsequently incorporated many features from FreeBSD 9-STABLE and FreeBSD 10-STABLE. MidnightBSD uses the mport system for package management, which utilizes an SQLite database to store indexes and metadata. Installation, removal, and searching for packages is done with a single command mport<\/a><\/noindex>. <\/p>\n

The new release focuses on updating core system libraries and addressing security issues.
