The installation builds are prepared for architectures x86_64, s390x (IBM System z), ppc64le, and Aarch64, but <noindex>are</noindex> for <noindex>download</noindex> only for registered users of the Red Hat Customer Portal. The source texts of the rpm packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 are distributed through <noindex>Git repository</noindex> CentOS. The RHEL 8.x branch will be supported at least until 2029.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 is the first release prepared according to the new predictable development cycle, which involves shaping releases every six months at a predetermined time. Having precise information on the release timing allows for the synchronization of development schedules across various projects, enabling advance preparation for a new release and planning for the time to apply updates.

It is noted that the new <noindex>lifecycle</noindex> RHEL products cover several levels, including Fedora as a platform for implementing new features, <noindex>CentOS Stream</noindex> for accessing packages prepared for the next interim release of RHEL (the rolling variant of RHEL),
a minimalist universal base image (UBI) for running applications in isolated containers, and <noindex>RHEL Developer Subscription</noindex> for free use of RHEL during development.

Key <noindex>changes</noindex>:

Full support has been provided for the Live Patch application mechanism (<noindex>kpatch</noindex>) to address vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel without restarting the system and without interrupting service. Previously, kpatch was categorized as an experimental feature;

Based on the <noindex>fapolicyd</noindex> framework, the ability to create whitelists and blacklists for applications is implemented, allowing for the delineation of which programs a user can run and which they cannot (for example, to block the execution of unverified external executables). The decision to block or allow execution can be made based on the application name, path, content hash, and MIME type. Rule checks are performed during system calls open() and exec(), which may negatively impact performance;

Included are SELinux profiles focused on use with isolated containers, allowing for finer-grained management of the access of containerized services to the host system's resources. A new utility, udica, has been proposed for generating SELinux rules for containers, enabling access to only the necessary external resources such as storage, devices, and network, considering the specifics of each particular container. SELinux utilities (libsepol, libselinux, libsemanage, policycoreutils, checkpolicy, mcstrans) have been updated to version 2.9, and the SETools package to version 4.2.2.

A new SELinux type has been added — boltd_t, which restricts boltd, a process for managing devices with the Thunderbolt 3 interface (boltd now runs in a SELinux-constrained container). A new SELinux rules class — bpf — has been added, which controls access to the Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) and inspects applications for eBPF;

The routing protocol stack has been included <noindex>FRRouting</noindex> (BGP4, MP-BGP, OSPFv2, OSPFv3, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng, PIM-SM/MSDP, LDP, IS-IS), which has replaced the previously used Quagga package (FRRouting is a fork from Quagga, so compatibility has not been affected);

For encrypted partitions in LUKS2 format, support has been added for online re-encryption of block devices without interrupting their use in the system (for example, it is now possible to change the key or encryption algorithm without unmounting the partition);

Support for the new version of the SCAP protocol 1.3 (Security Content Automation Protocol) has been added to the OpenSCAP framework;

Updated versions of OpenSSH 8.0p1, Tuned 2.12, chrony 3.5, samba 4.10.4. Modules with new branches PHP 7.3, Ruby 2.6, Node.js 12, and nginx 1.16 have been added to the AppStream repository (updates to modules with previous branches continue). Packages with GCC 9, LLVM 8.0.1, Rust 1.37, and Go 1.12.8 have been added to the Software Collection;

The SystemTap tracing toolkit has been updated to branch 4.1, and the memory debugging toolkit Valgrind to version 3.15;

A new utility healthcheck has been added to the Identity Management (IdM) server deployment tools, simplifying the identification of issues with identity server environments. The installation and configuration of IdM environments have been simplified due to the support of Ansible roles and the ability to install modules. Support for trusted forests (Active Directory Trusted Forest) based on Windows Server 2019 has been added.

In the classic GNOME session (GNOME Classic), the virtual desktop switcher has been changed. The widget for switching between desktops is now located on the right side of the bottom panel and styled as a strip with desktop thumbnails (to switch to another desktop, simply click on the thumbnail reflecting its contents);

The DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) subsystem and low-level graphics drivers (amdgpu, nouveau, i915, mgag200) have been updated to be consistent with the Linux kernel 5.1. Support for AMD Raven 2, AMD Picasso, AMD Vega, Intel Amber Lake-Y, and Intel Comet Lake-U video subsystems has been added.

The toolkit for upgrading RHEL 7.6 to RHEL 8.1 has been enhanced with support for upgrading without reinstallation for ARM64, IBM POWER (little endian), and IBM Z architectures. A system pre-check mode has been added to the web console before the upgrade. The cockpit-leapp plugin has been introduced to restore the state in the event of issues during the upgrade. The separation of the /var and /usr directories into separate partitions has been ensured. UEFI support has been added. <noindex>Leapp</noindex> ensures the upgrade of packages from the Supplementary repository (includes proprietary packages);

Image Builder has been enhanced with support for building images for cloud environments Google Cloud and Alibaba Cloud. During the image composition, the ability to use repo.git has been added to include additional files from arbitrary Git repositories;

In Glibc, additional checks have been introduced for malloc to detect situations where allocated memory blocks are corrupted;

The dnf-utils package has been renamed to yum-utils for compatibility (the ability to install dnf-utils is retained, but this package will be automatically replaced with yum-utils);

A new edition of Red Hat Enterprise Linux System Roles has been added, <noindex>a company that</noindex> a set of modules and roles for deploying a centralized configuration management system based on Ansible and configuring subsystems to leverage specific functionalities related to storage, networking capabilities, time synchronization, SElinux rules, and the implementation of the kdump mechanism. For example, a new role
storage allows tasks such as managing file systems on disks, working with LVM groups, and logical partitions;

The network stack for VXLAN and GENEVE tunnels has been enhanced to handle ICMP packets such as 'Destination Unreachable', 'Packet Too Big', and 'Redirect Message', resolving issues that prevented route redirection and Path MTU Discovery in VXLAN and GENEVE.

An experimental implementation of the XDP (eXpress Data Path) subsystem allows running BPF programs at the network driver level in Linux with direct access to the DMA buffer of packets and at the stage before skbuff buffer allocation by the network stack, while also syncing eBPF components with the Linux kernel 5.0. Experimental support for the AF_XDP (<noindex>eXpress Data Path</noindex>);

has been fully supported for the network protocol <noindex>TIPC</noindex> (Transparent Inter-process Communication), designed for organizing inter-process communication in a cluster. The protocol provides means for the fast and reliable interaction of applications, regardless of the nodes in the cluster on which they are running;

A new mode for saving the kernel dump in case of a failure has been added to initramfs — '<noindex>early kdump</noindex>', which operates during the early stages of the boot process;

A new kernel parameter ipcmni_extend has been added, extending the IPC identifier limit from 32 KB (15 bits) to 16 MB (24 bits), allowing applications to utilize more shared memory segments;

Ipset has been updated to release 7.1 with support for IPSET_CMD_GET_BYNAME and IPSET_CMD_GET_BYINDEX operations;

The rngd daemon, responsible for filling the entropy pool of the pseudo-random number generator, no longer requires running with root privileges;

Full support for <noindex>Intel OPA</noindex> (Omni-Path Architecture) for hardware with Host Fabric Interface (HFI) and full support for Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory devices.

By default, debug kernels now include a build with the Undefined Behavior Sanitizer (UBSAN), which adds additional checks in the compiled code to identify situations where program behavior becomes undefined (e.g., using non-static variables before initialization, dividing integers by zero, integer overflow of signed types, dereferencing NULL pointers, alignment issues with pointers, etc.);

The kernel source tree with real-time operation extensions (kernel-rt) has been synchronized with the main RHEL 8 kernel code;

A driver ibmvnic has been added for the vNIC (Virtual Network Interface Controller) network controller implementing PowerVM virtual networking technology. When used in conjunction with SR-IOV NIC, the new driver allows management of bandwidth and quality of service at the level of the virtual network adapter, significantly reducing overhead from virtualization and decreasing CPU load;

Support for Data Integrity Extensions has been added, allowing data to be protected from corruption during writing to storage by saving additional error-correcting blocks;

Experimental support (Technology Preview) for the <noindex>nmstate</noindex>package has been added, providing a library and the nmstatectl utility for managing network settings through a declarative API (network state is described in the form of a predefined schema);

Experimental support has been added for the implementation of the TLS protocol at the kernel level (KTLS) with AES-GCM based encryption, as well as experimental support for OverlayFS, cgroup v2, <noindex>Stratis</noindex>, mdev (<noindex>Intel vGPU</noindex>) and DAX (direct access to the filesystem bypassing the page cache without using block device level) in ext4 and XFS;

Support for DSA, TLS 1.0, and TLS 1.1 has been deprecated, removed from the DEFAULT set, and moved to LEGACY ('update-crypto-policies --set LEGACY');

The packages 389-ds-base-legacy-tools,
authd,
custodia,
hostname,
libidn,
net-tools,
network-scripts,
nss-pam-ldapd,
sendmail,
yp-tools,
ypbind, and ypserv have been deprecated. In a significant future release, their delivery may be discontinued;

The ifup and ifdown scripts have been replaced with wrappers that call NetworkManager via nmcli (to restore
