Ten years later, Amazon Web Services launched Amazon S3, sending the world into a frenzy over flat address spaces. With its metadata handling capabilities and ability to scale without faltering under load, object storage quickly became the standard for most cloud data storage services and beyond. Another important feature is its suitability for storing archives and infrequently used files. Everyone involved in data storage was thrilled and embraced this new technology.

However, there were rumors that object storage was only for large clouds, and that if you didn't want solutions from greedy capitalists, creating your own would be very difficult. A lot has been written about deploying your own cloud, while information on creating so-called S3-compatible solutions is scarce.

Today, we'll explore the options available for "Like what adults have, rather than CEPH and a bigger file"; we will expand on one of them, and we'll verify that everything works using Veeam Backup & Replication. It claims to support working with S3-compatible storage, and we will be checking that claim.

<noindex></noindex>

But what about others?

I suggest we start with a brief overview of the market and object storage options. The widely recognized leader and standard is Amazon S3. The two closest competitors are Microsoft Azure Blob Storage and IBM Cloud Object Storage.

Is that really all? Are there no other competitors? Of course, there are competitors, but some follow their own path, like Google Cloud or Oracle Cloud Object Storage, with partial support for the S3 API. Some use older API versions, like Baidu Cloud. And some, like Hitachi Cloud, require special logic that will undoubtedly bring its own challenges. In any case, everyone is compared to Amazon, which can be considered the industry standard.

In on-premise solutions, the choice is much broader, so let's identify the criteria that matter to us. Generally, only two criteria are needed: support for S3 API and use of v4 signing. To be honest, as future clients, we are primarily interested in the interfaces for interaction, and the internal workings of the storage are less of a concern.

Many solutions fit these simple conditions. For example, classic corporate heavyweights:

DellEMC ECS

NetApp S3 StorageGrid

Nutanix Buckets

Pure Storage FlashBlade and StorReduce

Huawei FusionStorage

There is a niche of purely software solutions that work out of the box:

Red Hat Ceph

SUSE Enterprise Storage

Cloudian

And even for those who love to fine-tune after assembly, there are options:

CEPH in its pure form

Minio (Linux version, since the Windows version has many questions)

This list is far from complete; it can be discussed in the comments. Just remember to check not only API compatibility before implementation but also the system's performance. The last thing you want is to lose terabytes of data due to stalled requests. So don't hesitate with load testing. In general, all mature software that works with large volumes of data has at least compatibility reports. In the case of Veeam there are <noindex>a whole program</noindex> for mutual testing, allowing us to confidently claim complete compatibility of our products with specific hardware. This is already a bilateral process, not always quick, but we continuously expand <noindex>list</noindex> the list of tested solutions.

Let's assemble our stand

I want to talk a bit about choosing the test subject.

First of all, I wanted to find an option that would work right out of the box. Or at least one where there is a high likelihood it will work without requiring unnecessary effort. Dancing around and poking at the console at night is very engaging, but sometimes you just want it to work immediately. Plus, the overall reliability of such solutions is usually higher. And yes, we've lost our sense of adventure; we've stopped climbing through windows to see our beloved women, etc.

Secondly, to be honest, the need to work with object storage arises for quite large companies, so this is precisely the case where looking towards enterprise-level solutions is not only acceptable but actually encouraged. At least, I don't know of any examples where someone was fired for purchasing such solutions.

Based on all of the above, I chose Dell EMC ECS Community Edition. This is a very interesting project, and I find it necessary to tell you about it.

The first thing that comes to mind when seeing the addition Community Edition — that it is just a copy of a full-fledged ECS with some limitations that are lifted by purchasing a license. Well, it's not!

Remember:

!!!Community Edition is a separate project designed for testing and does not come with support from Dell!!
And it cannot be turned into a full-fledged ECS, no matter how much you want to.

Let's sort this out.

Many believe that Dell EMC ECS is one of the best solutions if you need object storage. All projects under the ECS brand, including commercial and corporate ones, are available on <noindex>GitHub</noindex>. This is a gesture of goodwill from Dell. Besides the software that runs on their branded hardware, there is an open-source version that can be deployed in the cloud, on a virtual machine, in a container, or on any of your own hardware. To get ahead of ourselves — there is even an OVA version, which we will make use of.
The DELL ECS Community Edition is a mini-version of the full software that operates on branded Dell EMC ECS servers.

I have outlined four main differences:

No encryption support. Disappointing, but not critical.

No Fabric Layer. This component is responsible for building clusters, resource management, updates, monitoring, and storing Docker images. This is indeed disappointing, but one can understand Dell as well.

The worst consequence of the previous point: the size of the node cannot be expanded after installation is complete.

No technical support. This is a testing product that can be used in small installations, but personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable loading petabytes of important data into it. However, technically, no one can stop you from doing so.

And what about the larger version?

Let’s quickly review the hardware solutions to have a more complete understanding of the ecosystem.

I won’t validate or dispute the statement that DELL ECS is the best on-prem object storage, but if you have something to say about it, I’d love to read it in the comments. In any case, according to the <noindex>IDC MarketScape 2018</noindex> Dell EMC confidently ranks among the top five leaders in the OBS market. Although cloud-based solutions are not considered there, that's a different conversation.

From a technical standpoint, ECS is an object storage system that provides data access through cloud storage protocols. It supports AWS S3 and OpenStack Swift. For file-enabled ECS buckets, NFSv3 is supported for file-level export.

The process of writing information is quite unusual, especially compared to traditional block storage systems.

When new data arrives, a new object is created, which includes a name, the data itself, and metadata.

Objects are split into chunks of 128 MB, and each chunk is immediately written to three nodes.

The index file is updated to record identifiers and storage locations.

The log file is updated (write log) and is also recorded on three nodes.

A message is sent to the client confirming successful writing.
All three copies of the data are written simultaneously. The write is considered successful only if all three copies are successfully written.

Reading is simpler:

The client requests the data.

The index is searched for the data's storage location.

Data is read from one node and sent to the client.

There are quite a few servers, so let's look at the smallest Dell EMC ECS EX300. It starts at 60TB, with the ability to grow up to 1.5PB. Its bigger brother, the Dell EMC ECS EX3000, can store up to 8.6PB per rack.

Deploy

Technically, Dell ECS CE can be deployed to any size. In any case, I didn't find explicit limitations. However, scaling is conveniently done by cloning the very first node, for which we will need:

8 vCPU

64GB RAM

16GB for the operating system

1TB specifically for storage

The latest release of CentOS minimal

This is an option if you want to install everything yourself from the beginning. In our case, this option is not relevant as I will use an OVA image for deployment.

But in any case, the requirements are quite demanding even for a single node, and if you strictly follow the letter of the law, you need four such nodes.

However, the developers of ECS CE operate in the real world, and installation proceeds successfully even with one node, while the minimum requirements are as follows:

4 vCPU

16 GB RAM

16 GB for the operating system

104 GB for the storage itself

These are the resources needed for deploying an OVA image. Much more humane and realistic.

The installation node can be obtained from the official website. <noindex>github</noindex>There is also detailed documentation on the all-in-one deployment, but you can read more on the official <noindex>readthedocs</noindex>. Therefore, we will not dwell in detail on the deployment of OVA, as it is straightforward. The main thing is to remember to either expand the disk to the required size or attach the necessary one before launching.
We start the machine, open the console, and use the best default credentials:

login: admin

password: ChangeMe

Then we run sudo nmtui and configure the network interface — IP/mask, DNS, and gateway. Remember that minimal CentOS does not have net-tools, so we check the settings with ip addr.

And since only the bold conquer the seas, we do yum update, followed by reboot. In fact, this is quite safe, as the entire deployment is done through playbooks, and all the important Docker packages are locked to the current version.

Now it’s time to edit the installation script. No fancy windows or pseudo UI — everything through your favorite text editor. Technically, there are two ways: you can run each command manually or immediately launch the videploy configurator. It will simply open the config in vim and run a check upon exiting. But consciously making life easier is not interesting, so we will execute two more commands. Although there’s no real purpose in it, I warned you =)

So, let's do vim ECS-CommunityEdition/deploy.xml and make the minimally optimal changes to enable and run ECS. The list of parameters can be shortened, but I did it this way:

licensed_accepted: true You can skip changing this, otherwise during deployment, you will be explicitly asked to accept it and shown a nice phrase. It might even be an Easter egg.

Uncomment the lines autonames: and custom: Enter at least one desired name for the node — the hostname will be replaced by it during installation.

install_node: 192.168.1.1 Specify the actual IP of the node. It states that the minimal requirement is to specify the IP and subnet mask, but in my lab, such a set was not functioning well, so I had to expand it as mentioned above.

After exiting the editor, you need to run update_deploy /home/admin/ECS-CommunityEdition/deploy.yml, and if everything is done correctly, you will be notified explicitly.

Then you will have to run videploy, wait for the environment to update, and you can start the installation with the command ova-step1, and after its successful execution, the command ova-step2. Important: do not manually stop the scripts! Some steps may take a significant amount of time, may not succeed on the first attempt, and may appear as if everything is broken. In any case, you need to wait for the script to complete naturally. In the end, you should see a message like this.

Now finally we can open the WebUI control panel at the IP we know. If nothing was changed during configuration, the default credentials will be root/ChangeMe. You can even start using our S3-compatible storage immediately. It is accessible on ports 9020 for HTTP and 9021 for HTTPS. Again, if you haven’t changed anything, the access_key will be object_admin1 and the secret_key will be ChangeMeChangeMeChangeMeChangeMeChangeMe.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and start in order.

Upon first login, you will be forcibly prompted to change your password to something reasonable, which is absolutely correct. The main dashboard is extremely user-friendly, so let’s do something more interesting than explaining obvious metrics. For example, let’s create a user that we will use to access the storage. In the world of service providers, such users are referred to as tenants. This is done in Manage > Users > New Object User.

When creating a user, we are asked to specify a namespace. Technically, nothing prevents us from creating as many as there will be users. And vice versa. This allows for independent resource management for each tenant.

Accordingly, we select the necessary functions and generate user keys. S3/Atmos will be sufficient for me. And don’t forget to save the key 😉.

The user is created, now it’s time to allocate a bucket for them. We go to Manage > Bucket and fill in the required fields. It’s quite simple.

Now we are all set for practical use of our S3 storage.

Configure Veeam.

As we recall, one of the main uses of object storage is for long-term storage of information that is rarely accessed. A perfect example is the need for storing backups at a remote site. In Veeam Backup & Replication, this feature is called Capacity Tier.

Let's start the setup by adding our Dell ECS CE in the Veeam interface. In the Backup Infrastructure tab, we launch the wizard to add a new repository and select Object Storage.

We choose what this is all about — S3 Compatible.

In the pop-up window, we enter the desired name and proceed to the Account step. Here, we need to specify the Service point as <noindex>https://your_IP:9021</noindex>, you can leave the region as is, and add the created user. A gateway server is necessary if your storage is located at a remote site, but that's already a topic for infrastructure optimization and a separate article, so we can safely skip this here.

If everything is specified and configured correctly, a certificate warning will pop up, followed by a window with the bucket where you can create a folder for our files.

We proceed through the wizard to the end and enjoy the result.

On the next step, you need to either create a new Scale-out Backup Repository or add our S3 to an existing one — it will be used as a Capacity Tier for archival storage. The ability to use S3-compatible storage directly as a regular repository is not available in the current release. There are too many somewhat non-obvious problems to solve for this, but everything is possible.
We go into the repository settings and enable the Capacity Tier. Everything is transparent there, but there is an interesting nuance: if you want all data to be sent to object storage in the shortest time, simply set it to 0 days.

After completing the wizard, if you don't want to wait, you can press ctrl+RMB on the repository, forcibly initiate the Tiering job, and observe how the graphs start to move.

That's all for now.
