Janayugom<\/a> \u2014 a daily newspaper published in the state of Kerala (India) in Malayalam and has about 100,000 subscribers. <\/p>\n

Until recently, they used the proprietary Adobe PageMaker, but the age of the software (the last release was back in 2001) and the lack of Unicode support prompted management to seek alternatives.<\/p>\n

Upon discovering that the industry-standard Adobe InDesign requires a monthly subscription instead of a one-time license, which the newspaper could not afford, management turned to the local Institute of Printing. There, they were advised to use the open source Scribus, and several people from the Indian Free Software community<\/a>.<\/p>\n

were involved in creating a custom distribution Janayugom GNU\/Linux<\/a> based on Kubuntu, which includes alternatives to proprietary software such as Scribus, Gimp, Inkscape, Krita, and Shotwell.<\/p>\n

Three fonts are being developed (one has already been completed) that support the entire Malayalam alphabet. The Janayugom Edit editor has been created to open existing PageMaker files to completely avoid using Windows.<\/p>\n

More than 100 newspaper employees underwent a five-day training: the first day was an introduction to the stack and work process, the second day focused on GIMP and Inkscape, and the remaining three days were dedicated to Scribus. Separate training sessions were also held for photographers and system administrators.<\/p>\n

Starting from October 2 (the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth), all editions of the newspaper will fully utilize the free stack for preparing and laying out material. After a month of successful operation, the head of the Kerala government publicly announced the achievement.<\/p>\n

Following Janayugom's example, the Journalism Academy organized a two-day seminar with representatives from local newspapers to discuss the possibilities and benefits of using free software.<\/p>\n
