Even before the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield, players discovered numerous references to British culture within the project. One of these recently emerged and is particularly intriguing. The reference relates to ugly Pok\u00e9mon and a real story from British history.<\/p>\n

In most Pokemon games, there is an option to resurrect Pokemon from fossils that you find somewhere in the region. Even in Pokemon Red and Blue, you can resurrect Omanyte or Aerodactyl. But in Pokemon Sword and Shield, the resurrection process adds a bit of British history \u2014 a \"paleontologist\" named Cara Liss.<\/p>\n
While traveling through the Galar region, you may come across four fossils. These skeletons are vaguely labeled as \"Drake,\" \"Bird,\" \"Fish,\" and \"Dino.\" When Cara Liss combines them together using her scientific machine, you get one of four prehistoric monsters, of which something is clearly wrong with their structure. Even the entries in the Pokedex suggest that every moment they are alive is a virtual torment. One cannot eat because its mouth is on top, another cannot breathe unless it is underwater, and the third can hardly breathe at all.<\/p>\n

It is clear that Cara Liss just mixed the fossils together. The ancient Pokemon Dracovish has a fish head and a lizard-like body with thick legs that theoretically should allow it to run at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour \u2014 except that it hardly can breathe air. All of the entries of these chimeras in the Pokedex imply: \"Wow, what an inefficient body. No wonder these Pokemon went extinct, right?\"<\/p>\n

Cara Liss and her crazy science draw a parallel to the 19th-century paleontological frenzy that swept through Britain, Europe, and America. Major strides were made in discovering dinosaurs, but fierce competition and a general misunderstanding of the anatomy of these beings led to false conclusions.
