If Marty McFly had known that in 2015 (let alone 2020) people would not only fail to invent hoverboards but also not manage to eliminate unwanted mail completely, he might have lost faith in humanity. Moreover, spam today is not just annoying; it is often malicious. In about 70% of cases in the cyber killchain, criminals penetrate infrastructure through malware contained in attachments or phishing links in emails.

<noindex></noindex>
Recently, there has been a clear trend towards the use of social engineering as a way to penetrate the internal infrastructure of organizations. Comparing statistics from 2017 and 2018, we observe nearly a 50% increase in cases where malware was delivered to employees' computers specifically through attachments or phishing links in the body of emails.

In general, the full spectrum of threats that can be realized through email can be divided into several categories:

incoming spam

inclusion of the organization's computers in a botnet that sends outgoing spam

malicious attachments and viruses in the body of the email (small companies are often targeted by mass attacks like Petya).

To protect against all types of attacks, one can either deploy several security solutions or opt for a service model. We already <noindex>talked</noindex> discussed the Unified Cybersecurity Services Platform – the core of the Solar MSS managed cybersecurity services ecosystem. Among other things, it includes the virtualized Secure Email Gateway (SEG) technology. Typically, this service is subscribed to by small companies, where all IT and cybersecurity functions are handled by one person – the system administrator. Spam is a problem that is always visible to users and management, and it cannot be ignored. However, over time it becomes clear to management that simply 'handing it off' to the sysadmin isn't effective – it takes up too much time.

2 hours spent sorting through emails is quite excessive.

We received a similar situation from one of the retailers. The time tracking systems showed that every day, his employees spent about 25% of their working hours (2 hours!) managing their inbox.

By connecting the client's mail server, we configured the SEG instance as a two-way gateway for both incoming and outgoing mail. We initiated filtering based on pre-established policies. The blacklist was created based on the analysis of data provided by the client and our own lists of potentially dangerous addresses, gathered by Solar JSOC experts from other services, such as incident monitoring in information security. After this, all emails were delivered to recipients only after being cleared, and various spam blasts about 'grand discounts' stopped flooding the client's mail servers, freeing up space for other needs.

However, there were situations when a legitimate email was mistakenly categorized as spam, for example, one received from an untrusted sender. In this case, we left the decision to the client. There aren't many options: either delete it immediately or send it to quarantine. We chose the latter option, in which such unwanted mail is retained on the SEG itself. We provided the sysadmin access to the web console, where he could anytime find an important email, like one from a counterparty, and allow it through to the user.

Getting rid of parasites

The email protection service includes analytical reports aimed at monitoring the security of the infrastructure and the effectiveness of the applied settings. Furthermore, these reports allow for trend forecasting. For example, we find the relevant sections in the report like 'Spam by Recipient' or 'Spam by Sender' and observe which addresses are receiving the highest number of blocked messages.

It was during the analysis of such a report that we found the sudden surge in the total number of emails for one of the clients suspicious. Their infrastructure is small, and the volume of emails is low. Yet, after the workday, the amount of blocked spam nearly doubled. We decided to look closer.

We notice that the number of outgoing emails has increased, and all have addresses from the domain that is connected to the email protection service. However, there is one nuance: among the seemingly legitimate, possibly even existing, addresses, there are some that are clearly suspicious. We checked the IPs from which the emails were sent, and, as expected, they do not belong to the protected address space. It is clear that an attacker was sending spam in the name of the client.

In this case, we provided the client with recommendations for correctly configuring their DNS records, specifically SPF. Our specialist advised creating a TXT record containing the rule "v=spf1 mx ip:1.2.3.4/23 -all," which includes a comprehensive list of addresses authorized to send emails on behalf of the protected domain.

So, why is this important: spam sent in the name of an unknown small company is unpleasant but not critical. The situation is quite different in the banking sector, for example. Based on our observations, the victim's trust in a phishing email significantly increases if it appears to be sent from the domain of another bank or a well-known counterpart. This trend is not unique to banking employees; we encounter the same behavior in other industries, like energy.

Eliminating viruses

However, spoofing is not as common a problem as, for example, viral infections. And how do people usually fight viral outbreaks? They install antivirus software and hope that the "enemy won't get through." But if it were that simple, considering the relatively low cost of antivirus programs, everyone would have long since forgotten about malware issues. Yet, we constantly receive requests like, "help recover files, everything is encrypted, our work is halted, data is lost." We tirelessly remind clients that antivirus is not a panacea. In addition to the fact that antivirus databases may not update quickly enough, we often encounter malware capable of bypassing not only antivirus software but also sandboxes.

Unfortunately, very few ordinary employees in organizations are aware of phishing and malicious emails and are able to distinguish them from regular correspondence. On average, every 7th user who does not undergo regular awareness training falls victim to social engineering: they open an infected file or send their data to criminals.

Although the social attack vector has generally been gradually increasing, this trend became particularly noticeable last year. Phishing emails began to resemble standard newsletters about promotions, upcoming events, etc. One can recall the Silence attack on the financial sector, where bank employees received an email supposedly containing a promo code for participation in the popular industry conference iFin, and the number of those who fell for the scam was very high, despite the fact that we are talking about the banking sector, the most advanced in information security issues.

Before the last New Year, we also observed several rather amusing situations when employees of industrial companies received very high-quality phishing emails with a "list" of New Year promotions from popular online stores and discount promo codes. Employees not only attempted to click the link themselves but also forwarded the email to colleagues from related organizations. Since the resource to which the link in the phishing email directed was blocked, employees began to submit mass requests to the IT service for access to it. Overall, the success of the campaign must have exceeded the attackers' expectations.

Recently, we were contacted for help by a company that was "encrypted." It all started when accounting staff received an email supposedly from the Central Bank of Russia. An accountant clicked the link in the email and downloaded the WannaMine miner onto his machine, which, like the infamous WannaCry, exploited the EternalBlue vulnerability. It is interesting to note that most antivirus programs have been able to detect its signatures since early 2018. However, whether the antivirus was turned off, the databases were not updated, or it was simply not there at all—regardless, the miner was already on the computer, and nothing prevented it from spreading further through the network, consuming the CPU servers and RAM at 100%.

This client, after receiving the report from our forensics team, realized that the virus initially infiltrated through email, and launched a pilot project to connect an email protection service. The first thing we set up was an email antivirus. Scanning for malware is conducted continuously, with signature updates initially performed every hour, and then the client switched to twice a day.

Comprehensive protection against viral infections should be layered. When it comes to the transmission of viruses via email, it is necessary to filter such emails at the entry point, train users to recognize social engineering, and only then rely on antivirus software and sandboxes.

Always on guard

Of course, we do not claim that Secure Email Gateway solutions are a panacea. Targeted attacks, including spear phishing, are extremely difficult to prevent, as each such attack is tailored to a specific recipient (organization or individual). But for a company trying to maintain a basic level of security, this is significant, especially with the right experience and expertise applied to the task.

Most often, in targeted phishing, malicious attachments are not included in the body of the emails, otherwise the anti-spam system would immediately block such an email on its way to the recipient. Instead, links to a pre-prepared web resource are included in the text of the email, and then it’s just a matter of time. The user clicks on the link, and after several redirects, in a few seconds, they find themselves at the final destination, opening which will load malware onto their computer.

Even more insidious: at the moment the email is received, the link may be harmless, and only after some time, once it has already been scanned and approved, will it start redirecting to malicious content. Unfortunately, the specialists at Solar JSOC, even considering their competencies, cannot configure the mail gateway to 'see' malware throughout the entire chain (though as a protection, automatic replacement of all links in emails on SEG can be used, so that the last one scans the link not only at the moment of email delivery but at each click).

Meanwhile, even with a typical redirect, the aggregation of various types of expertise, including data from our JSOC CERT and OSINT, helps to manage it. This allows for the formation of advanced blacklists based on which even an email with multiple forwards will be blocked.

The use of SEG is just a small brick in the wall that any organization wants to build to protect its assets. However, this link must be correctly placed within the overall picture because even SEG, when properly configured, can become a complete security tool.

Ksenia Sadunina, consultant in the
