In the Python package directory PyPI (Python Package Index) detected<\/a><\/noindex> malicious packages «python3-dateutil<\/a><\/noindex>\" and \"jeIlyfish<\/a><\/noindex>« uploaded by a single author olgired2017 and disguised as popular packages «dateutil<\/a><\/noindex>\" and \"jellyfish<\/a><\/noindex>» (differentiated by the use of the character «I» (i) instead of «l» (L) in the name). After installing the specified packages, encryption keys and user confidential data found in the system were sent to the attacker's server. Currently, the problematic packages have already been removed from the PyPI directory.<\/p>\n

The malicious code was directly present in the package «jeIlyfish», while the package «python3-dateutil» used it as a dependency.
\nThe names were chosen based on the assumption of inattentive users making typos while searching (typosquatting<\/a><\/noindex>). The malicious package «jeIlyfish» was uploaded about a year ago \u2014 on December 11, 2018, and remained undetected. The package «python3-dateutil» was uploaded on November 29, 2019, and within a few days raised suspicion among one of the developers. No information is provided on the number of installations of the malicious packages.<\/p>\n

The package jellyfish included code that loads a list of «hashes» from an external GitLab-based repository. Analyzing the logic of working with these «hashes» revealed that they contain a script encoded using the base64 function and executed after decoding. The script found SSH and GPG keys, as well as certain file types from the home directory and credentials for PyCharm projects, and then sent them to an external server hosted in the DigitalOcean cloud infrastructure.<\/p>\n
