Patches addressing the vulnerability are available for releases <noindex>6.5</noindex> and <noindex>6.6</noindex>. Binary patches (<noindex>syspatch</noindex>) for amd64, i386, and arm64 platforms have already been put into production and should be available for download by the time this news is published.

The essence of the problem: during its operation, ld.so first extracts the value of the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable from the environment, and uses the _dl_split_path() function to turn it into an array of strings — paths to directories. If it later becomes clear that the current process is running as a SUID/SGID application, the created array and the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable itself are cleared. Meanwhile, if _dl_split_path() encounters a memory shortage (which is difficult due to the explicit limitation on the size of environment variables to 256 KB, but theoretically possible), the _dl_libpath variable will be set to NULL, and the subsequent check of this variable's value will cause the call to _dl_unsetenv("LD_LIBRARY_PATH") to be skipped.

The vulnerability was discovered by specialists <noindex>Qualys</noindex>, as well as <noindex>several previously disclosed</noindex> issues. The security researchers who identified the vulnerability noted the promptness of the response: the patch was prepared and updates were released within three hours of notification by the OpenBSD project.

Supplement: The issue has been assigned the number <noindex>CVE-2019-19726</noindex>. An official announcement was made on the oss-security mailing list <noindex>, which includes a prototype exploit that works in OpenBSD 6.6, 6.5, 6.2, and 6.1 on the architectures</noindex>amd64 and i386 (the exploit can also be adapted for other architectures).
The problem can be exploited in a default installation and allows an unprivileged local user to execute code with root permissions through library substitution when running the SUID utilities chpass or passwd. To create the necessary conditions for exploitation, memory shortage is utilized by setting the RLIMIT_DATA limit via setrlimit.
The dynamic loader ld.so, which is part of OpenBSD, under
