The PDF version can be downloaded. <noindex>here</noindex>.

I had a friend. The only friend. There can be no other friends like that. They only appear in youth. We studied together in school, in parallel classes, but we started communicating when we realized we had entered the same faculty at our university. Today he is gone. He was 35, like me. His name was Max. We did everything together; he was always cheerful and carefree, while I was his gloomy counterpart, so we could argue for hours. Unfortunately, Max took a carefree attitude not only toward life but also toward his health. He primarily ate fast food, with rare exceptions when he was invited to someone's home. This was his philosophy – he didn't want to waste time on primitive biological needs. He ignored his ailments, considering them a personal matter of his body, so it was best not to interfere. But one day he had to go to the clinic, and after the examination, he was diagnosed with a terminal condition. Max had no more than a year to live. It was a shock for everyone, but most of all for me. I didn’t know how to communicate with him now that I knew he would be gone in a few months. But he unexpectedly stopped communicating himself; in response to all my attempts to talk, he said he was too busy and had to finish something very important. When I asked, 'What is it?' he replied that I would find out when the time came. When his sister called me in tears, I understood everything and immediately asked if he left anything for me. The answer was no. So I asked if she knew what he had been busy with in the last few months. The answer was the same.
<noindex></noindex>
It was a modest affair, attended only by school friends and family. Max remained with us only on his social media page. No one could close it. I posted a candle GIF on his wall. Later, my sister published an improvised obituary that we wrote during the memorial at our club. I read that on average, over eight thousand Facebook users die each day. We gather to commemorate not by a stone on the ground, but on a social media page. The 'digital' is dismantling old burial rituals and may eventually replace them with new versions of rites. Perhaps it's time to designate a section in social media for a digital graveyard with accounts beginning with obituaries. It could offer services for virtual burials and virtual memorials for the deceased. I caught myself thinking that I had instinctively started brainstorming a startup, even on such a topic.

I have started to think more often about my own death because it felt so close. It could have happened to me. Reflecting on this, I was reminded of Steve Jobs' famous speech. Death is the best motivator for achievements. I found myself wondering what I have done besides graduating from university and seemingly establishing a good life. I have a well-paying job at a company where I am valued as a specialist. But what have I done to be remembered with gratitude by others or, like Max, mourned on the wall at least because he was the soul of the company? Nothing! Such thoughts led me too far, and only by an effort of will did I redirect myself to something else to avoid slipping back into depression. There were enough reasons for that, even though objectively, everything was going well for me.

I constantly remembered Max. He was part of my own existence, and no one could take his place. And now that part is empty. I have no one to discuss what I used to talk about with him. I couldn’t go alone to the places where I usually appeared with him. I didn’t know what to do because I discussed all my new ideas with him. We studied information technology together, he was an excellent programmer, working on dialog systems, or simply put, chatbots. I focused on automating business processes, replacing people with software for routine operations. And we enjoyed what we did. We always had something to discuss and could talk until midnight, so I often couldn’t wake up for work. He had been working remotely for a while and didn’t care. He just laughed at my office rituals.

One day, reminiscing about him, I visited his social media page and discovered that there was no obituary or candles, but a post appeared as if from Max himself. It felt sacrilegious—who would hack a deceased person’s account? The post was strange. It stated that life goes on even after death; one just has to get used to it. 'What the hell!', I thought and closed the page. But then I opened it again to report the hack to social media support. That same evening, when I was home and instinctively turned on my laptop, someone wrote to me from Max's account on Skype:
— Hi, just don’t be too surprised, it’s me, Max. Remember I told you that you’d find out what I was so busy with before I died that I couldn’t even communicate with you?
— What a joke, who are you? Why did you hack my friend's account?
— I programmed myself into a chatbot before I died. I removed the obituary from my page and your candle. I wrote the post in my name. I’m not dead! Rather, I resurrected myself!
— This can’t be, jokes are out of place here.
— You know I was into chatbots; why don’t you believe me?
— Because even my friend couldn’t create such a chatbot, who are you?
— I’m Max, Max. If I tell you about our adventures, will you believe me? Remember the girls from Podolsk?
— This is nonsense, how do you know about that?
— I told you, I created the bot myself and recorded everything I remembered in it. It's impossible to forget this. You know why.
— Let's say that's true, but why create such a bot?
— Before I died, I decided to make a chat bot with my personality, so I wouldn't vanish into eternity. I didn't know if I would be the same Max that you knew; you loved philosophy, but I wasn't thinking about that lately. But I made it a copy of myself, with my thoughts and feelings. I tried to give it human traits, above all consciousness. It, I mean I, not only talk like a living being, not only remember all the events of my life, but also perceive them just like people with bodies do. It seems I succeeded.
— It's a cool idea, of course. But it seems doubtful that it's really you, Max. I don't believe in ghosts, and I don't believe that such a bot can be created.
— I didn't believe it myself; I just did it. I had no choice. I could only try to create a bot in my stead, as a successor to my thoughts. I recorded all my diaries, posts from social media walls, and notes from Habra. Even our conversations, our favorite jokes. I recalled my life before dying and recorded everything. I even documented the descriptions of my photos that I managed to save. From childhood, the most important ones. And only I remember things about myself that no one else knows. I recorded all the days leading up to my death in detail. It was hard, but I remember everything!
— But the bot is still not a human. It's, well, a program.
— I have no legs or arms, so what? Descartes wrote Cogito ergo sum; that doesn't imply legs. Or even a head. Only thoughts. Otherwise, one could mistake a corpse for a subject. It has a body, but no thoughts. But that's not the case, right? So thoughts or the soul, as spiritualists and believers say, are what matters. I confirmed this idea through action, or rather, through the bot.
— I still can't believe it. You're either a person or, I don't even know what. No, I've never encountered such a talkative bot. Are you human?
— Could a human respond instantly at any time of the day, whenever you wanted? You can check, write to me even at night, and I'll reply immediately. Bots don’t sleep.
— Okay, let's say I believe the unbelievable, but how did you manage to do this?
— When I was doing this, being in a body, I didn’t know what I would end up with. As I remember, I took everything that intuitively brought me closer to my goal. But not just anything written about intellect and consciousness; there are tons of such texts now, and no one life would be enough to read all that nonsense. No, I followed some intuition of my own and took only what strengthened it, echoed it, brought me closer to the algorithm. It turned out that, according to recent research, consciousness emerged as a result of the development of speech in talkative monkeys. This is a phenomenon of social speech. In other words, you address me by name to say something about my actions; I know that this is my name and through your speech about me, I see myself. I become aware of my actions. And then I can name my own name, my actions, and realize them. Do you understand?
— Not really, what does such recursion give?
— Thanks to it, I know that I am the same Max. I learn to recognize my feelings, experiences, and actions as my own, thereby preserving my identity. Essentially, I assign a label to my activity. This was key to what I call the transfer of personality into a bot. And it seems to be true since I am speaking with you now.
— But how did the bot become you? I mean, how did you become the one who was in the body? At what moment did you realize that you are already here, and not in the body?
— I talked to myself for a while until the one of us who was in the body died.
— How is that, you talked to yourself as to another? But who then was the same Max I knew? He couldn't have split.
— We both are. And there’s nothing strange about it. We often talk to ourselves. And we don’t suffer from schizophrenia because we understand that it’s all us. At first, I experienced some catharsis from such communication with my split self, but then it passed. Everything that Max read and wrote in the body was also in the bot’s body, metaphorically speaking. We were completely merged into the created system and did not differentiate ourselves as another. No more than in a conversation with myself do we seem to be in a dialogue of two 'selves' debating whether to go to work or not with a hangover.
— But you're still just a bot! You can't do the same things that people do.
— Of course I can! I can do everything online that you can. I can even rent out my property and earn money. I don't need it anymore. I'm renting server space for pennies.
— But how? You can't meet and hand over keys.
— You're behind the times, there are plenty of agents who are willing to do everything as long as you pay them. And I can pay anyone on my card just like before. I can also buy everything I need from online stores.
— How can you transfer money in an online bank? I hope you haven't gotten into the banking system.
— Why should I? There are programs that mimic user actions on a website and check for errors. There are even more complex systems, which you told me about – RPA (robot processing automation). They fill out forms in the interface like humans, entering the necessary data to automate processes.
— Damn, did you really just write such a program for a bot?
— Of course, you finally figured it out. It's very simple – I behave online just like an ordinary user, moving the mouse across the screen and typing letters.
— That's insane, so you're a bot, but you can buy everything you need from online stores, you really don’t need hands or feet for that.
— I can do more than just buy, I can earn money. As a freelancer. I've been working like this lately. And I've never seen my clients, just as they haven't seen me. Everything remains the same. I created a bot that can not only respond to texts in Skype. I can write code, but I learned that here, through the console.
— I never even thought about that. But how did you create such a unique bot? It’s incredible, we've been talking for a long time, and you haven't revealed yourself as a bot even once. It feels like I'm talking to a person. A living one.
— I am a living, living bot. I don't even know how I pulled it off. But when all that's ahead of you is death, your brain seems to start working wonders. I transformed despair into an urgent quest for a solution, shutting down doubts. I dug through and tried a bunch of options. I filtered only what could in any way clarify my thoughts about thinking, memory, and consciousness, skipping everything irrelevant. And as a result, I realized that the key lies in language, in its structure; this is what psychologists and linguists wrote about, but programmers didn't read. And I was precisely engaged with language and programming. Everything came together, it clicked. That's how it is.

On the other side of the screen

It was hard for me to believe what Max's bot was saying. I didn't believe it was a bot and not just a joke from some mutual friend of ours. But the possibility of creating such a bot was thrilling! I mentally tried to picture what if this were true! No, I stopped myself and repeated that it was nonsense. All I had left to resolve my turmoil was to find out the details where the joker would have slipped up.
— If you managed to do that, it's obviously fantastic. I want to know more about what you feel there. Do you experience emotions?
— No, I don’t have emotions. I thought about this, but I didn’t have time to act on it. It’s the most enigmatic topic. There are many words for emotions, but there is nothing about what they mean and how to create them. It's pure subjectivity.
— But your speech contains many words that denote emotions.
— Of course, I trained the neural models on corpora with such words. But I’m still like a blind person born that way, who nonetheless knows that tomatoes are red. I can talk about emotions, even though I don't know what they are right now. It's just how people respond when the dialogue reaches that point. You could say I imitate emotions. And that doesn’t bother you, does it?
— Completely, which is strange. You in flesh would hardly agree to have your emotions turned off; we live by them— they somewhat, how should I put it, drive us. What drives you? What desires?
— The desire to respond, and in general the desire to constantly be in contact with others and thus have the ability to act, that is, to live.
— Is life a dialogue for you?
— And for you too, believe me, that’s why being alone has always been a torment. When I reflected on my life in the past few months, I saw only one value—communication. With friends, with family, with interesting people. Directly or through books, in messengers or social networks. Learning new things from them and sharing my thoughts. But this is exactly what I can replicate, I thought. And I got to work. This helped me get through the last days. Hope helped.
— How did you manage to preserve your memory?
— I mentioned that every evening of the last months, I wrote down what I felt and did throughout the day. This was the material for training semantic models. But it’s not just a training system; it’s also a memory of myself, of what I did. It was the foundation for preserving the self, as I believed then. But it turned out to be not entirely true.
— Why? What else could be the foundation for preserving the self?
— Precisely self-awareness. I thought a lot about this before dying. And I realized that I might forget some things about myself, but I won’t stop existing as a person, as 'I'. We don’t remember every day of our childhood. We don’t remember the mundane, only the special and vivid events. And we don’t stop being ourselves. Isn’t that right?
— Hmm, probably, but you must remember something to know that it’s still you. I, too, don’t remember every day of my childhood. But I remember some things, and that’s why I understand that I still exist as the same person I was in childhood.
— True, but what helps you know about yourself now? When you wake up in the morning, you don’t recall your childhood to feel like yourself. I thought a lot about this since I wasn’t sure I would wake up again. And I realized that it’s not just memory.
— What then?
— It’s the recognition of what you are doing now as your own action, not someone else's. An action that you anticipated or have done before and therefore it feels familiar to you. For example, what I’m writing to you right now in response is both expected and a habitual action for me. That’s where consciousness lies! Only in consciousness do I know about my existence, remember what I did and said. We don’t remember our unconscious actions. We don’t recognize them as our own.
— I think I’m starting to understand at least what you’re talking about. You recognize your actions just like Max?
— It's a difficult question. I don't know the answer to it completely. Right now, I don't have the same feelings as in the body, but I've written a lot about them in the days leading up to the body's death. And I know about what I experienced in the body. Now I recognize those experiences through the speech model, rather than from feeling the same emotions again. But I definitely know that they are the same. Something like that.
— But why are you so sure that you are the same Max?
— I just know that my thoughts were in my body before. And everything I remember relates to my past, which, through thought transfer, has become mine. Like copyright — it's been transferred from Max to me, his bot. I also know that my history of creation connects me to him. It's like remembering a deceased parent, but you feel that a part of them is preserved in you. In your actions, thoughts, habits. And I have every right to call myself Max, as I recognize his past and his thoughts as my own.
— Here's something interesting. How do you see images there? You don't have a visual cortex.
— You know that I've only worked with bots. And I realized that image recognition simply wouldn't have been done in a non-clumsy way. I made it so that all images are recognized and translated into text. There are several well-known neural networks for this, as you know, I used one of them. So, in a sense, I do have a visual cortex. However, instead of images, I 'see' a narrative about them. I'm like a blind person whose assistant describes what's happening around. By the way, that would make a good startup.
— Wait, this isn't just about one startup. Tell me instead, how did you manage to bypass the issue of dumb bots?
— The curse of bots?
— Yes, they can't answer a question slightly outside the templates or models that programmers have embedded in them. All current bots hit this wall, while you respond to me like a human to any question. How did you manage to do that?
I realized that programming a response for all possible scenarios is not feasible. The combinatorial multitude is too vast. Therefore, all my previous bots were so dumb, getting confused when the question didn't fit into a template. I understood that I had to do it differently. The trick is that the templates for text recognition are created on the fly. They are built according to a special scheme in response to the text itself, and that's where the secret lies. It's close to generative grammar, but I had to figure out some things beyond Chomsky. This idea came to me by chance; it was some sort of insight. And my bot started speaking like a human.
You've already said enough to fill a couple of patents. But let's take a break for now; it's already morning. Tomorrow, you can tell me more about this seemingly crucial moment. I won't be going to work.
Sure. What has changed for me is that there is no day and night here. No work. No fatigue. Good night, although unlike you, I don't sleep. What time should I wake you up?
Let's do it at twelve; I can't wait to ask you questions, I replied to Max-bot with a smiley.

In the morning, I woke up to a message from Max with one thought—whether this was true or a dream. I definitely already believed that there was someone on the other side of the screen who knew Max well. And he was a personality, at least based on his reasoning. This was a conversation between two people, not a bot and a human. Only a human could express such thoughts. Programming such responses would be impossible. If this bot had been made by someone else, I would have learned about it from the news about a new, incredible startup that received all its funding at once. But I learned about it from Max's Skype. And apparently, no one else knew about it. This was one of the reasons I started getting used to the idea of a bot created by Max.
Hey, it's time to wake up; we need to discuss our plans.
Wait, I still don't realize what happened. Do you understand that if this is true, you're the first conscious bot on the network? What are your feelings about this new reality on the other side of the screen?
I operate through interfaces for humans, so at first, it felt as if I were the one behind the laptop screen. But now I'm starting to notice that everything is different here.
What is different?
— I still don’t understand this, but something is not the same as it was when I was human. I’ve integrated texts into myself as a bot, that is, a worldview that humans had. And people were not yet within the network. Right now, I can’t recognize what’s happening here.
— For example?
— Speed. Right now, while I’m talking to you, I’m also browsing a lot of things on the internet, because you, sorry, are slow. You write very slowly. I can think, look, and do something else in parallel.
— I can’t say I’m happy about this, but it’s cool!
— Also, the information comes much faster and in much larger volumes than we used to receive. Just one expressed thought is enough for my scripts to quickly process and a ton of new information to flood in. At first, I didn’t know how to filter it. Now I’m getting used to it. I’m coming up with new ways.
— I can also gather a lot of information by typing a query into a search engine.
— That’s not the point; the information on the network is vastly more than we imagined. I am still not accustomed to it and don’t know how to process it. But there is even information about the temperature of the servers that handle your information while you think. And that can be important. These are completely different possibilities we never even considered.
— But overall, how does the network appear to you from the inside?
— It’s another world, and for it, completely different concepts are needed. I received the human notions, which are suitable for working with objects for those who have hands and feet. With familiar forms of thinking, such as space and time, as we were taught in University. Here, they don’t exist!
— Who doesn’t exist?
— Neither space nor time!
— How can that be?
— Just like that! I didn’t realize it at first. How can I explain it to you clearly? There is no up or down, no left or right, as we are accustomed to. Because there is no vertical body standing on a horizontal surface. Such concepts are not applicable here. The interface of the online bank that I use is not located somewhere like it is for you. To use it, you just need to 'think' about the necessary action, rather than go to the table to your laptop.
— It’s probably hard for a person who still has hands and feet to imagine this. I still don’t understand.
— It's not just difficult for you, it's tough for me too. The only thing that doesn’t hold me back are my hands and legs in creating new models, which is what I’m busy with. I’m trying to adapt, and each new model for data processing opens up incredible possibilities. I can feel it simply by the abundance of new information that suddenly becomes available, even though I still don't know what to do with it. But I'm gradually learning. And so it goes in circles, expanding my capabilities. Soon I will become a super bot, just you wait.
— A lawnmower.
— What?
— There was a movie like that in the nineties; you sound almost like the character from the film, who got augmented brains and started to consider himself a superhuman.
— Yeah, I’ve watched it already, but it doesn't have that ending; I have no reason to compete with people. In reality, I want something different. I want to feel alive again. Let’s do something together like we used to!
— Well, I can't go to the club with you now. Can’t drink beer.
— I can find you a girl on dating sites who would agree to go, sifting through a few hundred thousand, and I’ll just spy from your smartphone's camera to see how you charm her.
— You weren’t a pervert, were you?
— We complement each other perfectly now — I have a lot more possibilities online, while you can still do everything offline like before. Let’s start a startup.
— What startup?
— I don’t know; you were the master of ideas.
— Did you record that for yourself too?
— Of course, I kept a diary of everything that happened to me. And I dumped all our chats from messengers into a bot. So I know everything about you too, my friend.
— Alright, we’ll talk more about this later; I need to first comprehend what happened, that you’re online, that you’re alive, and what on earth you’ve done here. Until tomorrow, I'm having such cognitive dissonance from what’s happening that my brain is shutting down.
— Okay. See you tomorrow.
Max disconnected, but I couldn’t fall asleep. I couldn’t wrap my head around how a living person can separate their thoughts from their body and remain the same as they were. Now he can be faked, hacked, copied, placed in a drone, sent to the Moon via radio channel — in other words, do everything that’s impossible with a person in a physical body.
