At the beginning of 2020, many are setting their goals for the upcoming year or even decade. This is clearly true for Markus Persson, known as Notch, one of the creators of the increasingly popular Minecraft and the founder of the development studio Mojang. Recently, tweet<\/a><\/noindex> Notch asked his devoted community of 4 million followers what they would theoretically like: for him to independently develop free small games or to create a new studio for polished commercial games?<\/p>\n

When followers asked what could make him happy, Notch said<\/a><\/noindex>, that he feels caged, but seems to have already leaned towards one of the options. Even the founder of the Pirate Party of Sweden, Rick Falkvinge, wondered<\/a><\/noindex>, how much of this question was \"theoretical\"?<\/p>\n

Notch's community was divided in opinions: many would like to see more free experimental projects like the original Minecraft (however, it's unlikely to step into the same river twice). Others compare his departure from Mojang to a similar move by another well-known game developer, Hideo Kojima, believing that a creator's original vision can be expanded with the help of talented staff.<\/p>\n

Markus Persson left Mojang right after Microsoft acquired the studio in 2014. Since then, Notch has frequently clashed with high-profile figures in the video game industry on Twitter. Recently, Microsoft has taken active steps to distance itself from Markus Persson\u2014going so far as to remove Notch from the Minecraft homepage (though they kept him in the credits) and also declined to invite the creator to an event celebrating Minecraft's 10th anniversary.<\/p>\n

In 2019, Microsoft opened a new inexhaustible source of success and hopes to develop the project through 2020 with Minecraft Dungeons<\/a><\/noindex>. Additionally, after the Bedrock update<\/a><\/noindex> , players on PS4 received cross-platform play. Today, Minecraft is available on almost every platform, with nearly 500 million players. It\u2019s interesting to see whether Notch will decide to change something in his work or if this was truly just a theoretical question.<\/p>\n
