Commenting on intent<\/a><\/noindex> the developers of Fedora including by default a background process earlyoom<\/a><\/noindex> for early response to memory shortages in the system, Lennart Poettering explained<\/a><\/noindex> on plans to integrate another solution into systemd \u2014 oomd<\/a><\/noindex>. The oomd handler is being developed by Facebook, whose employees are simultaneously working on the kernel subsystem PSI (Pressure Stall Information), allowing the user-space memory shortage handler to analyze information about the waiting time for various resources (CPU, memory, input\/output) for a precise assessment of the system's load and the nature of the slowdown.<\/p>\n

oomd is in the final stages of creating a universal product suitable for any workload without additional tuning. Once the last missing components of the PSI interface ('iocost') are added to the Linux kernel, Facebook intends to contribute oomd or a simplified version for inclusion in systemd. This is expected to happen within six months to a year. Earlyoom may be used in Fedora as a temporary solution until oomd is properly refined, but in the long term, Pottering believes that the future belongs to oomd.<\/p>\n
