This text is designed and written as a supplement to \u201cWhat I Learned Over 10 Years on Stack Overflow<\/a><\/noindex>\u00bb.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I'll say right away that I agree with Matt Birner on almost everything. However, I have a few additions that I believe are quite important, and I would like to share them.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I decided to write this note because over the seven years I've spent on SO<\/em>, I have gotten to know the community quite well from the inside. I have answered 3,516 questions, asked 58, made it into the hall of fame (top 20 in the world)<\/em> in both languages I write in regularly, made friends with many smart people, and I actively use almost all the opportunities the site offers.<\/p>\n

Every morning, over my coffee, I open my news feed, Twitter, and \u2014\u00a0SO<\/em>. And I believe that this site can give a developer much more than just a snippet for copy-pasting, carefully suggested by DuckDuckGo<\/a><\/noindex>. <\/p>\n

A long time ago, I came across this tweet:<\/p>\n

Paradoxically, I find the best way to learn a new language is to answer questions rather than ask them. \u2014\u00a0Jon Ericson<\/a><\/noindex><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I was somewhat surprised by the phrasing of the question back then, but over time I became convinced that this is pure truth. HackerRank<\/a><\/noindex>, Exercism<\/a><\/noindex> and similar sites provide an opportunity to solve spherical tasks in a vacuum and even discuss your solutions with nice, friendly people. The vast majority of books nowadays are supplemented with examples that can be downloaded and run. On GitHub, you can find an interesting project in the language you're learning and dive into the depths of someone else's source code. Here's the thing SO<\/em>?\u00a0\u2014 \u043e\u0442\u0432\u0435\u0442 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0442: \u0442\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u043d\u0430 SO<\/em> questions are born out of necessity, not from the whimsical imagination of specific individuals. By answering such questions, we inevitably hone our ability to think succinctly (within the syntax of our language), transfer commonly used patterns into our active memory, and when reading answers from others \u2014 we compare them with our own and remember the best approaches.<\/p>\n

If the answer to a question posed by strangers is not immediately obvious \u2014 it\u2019s even better if it isn\u2019t \u2014 then searching for the right solution brings much more skills than finding an answer to a task from HackerRank<\/em>. <\/p>\n

an objective assessment by the community<\/h3>\n

For developers who consider themselves seniors and above, it's quite important to compare their own sense of coolness with the objective opinions of strangers. I\u2019ve worked in teams where my skill level and abilities raised no questions from anyone. I literally felt like a guru. Actively participating in discussions on SO<\/em> quickly dispelled this myth in my mind. It suddenly became clear to me that I still have a long way to go before reaching the 'senior' level. I am very grateful to the community for this. The shower was icy, but very invigorating and exceptionally useful.<\/p>\n

Pleasant acquaintances<\/h3>\n

My active presence among those answering led me to meet many truly outstanding developers from different countries. It\u2019s great. They are all very interesting people, and you can always directly ask them to review the code of some complex library we decided to publish in OSS<\/em>. The qualifications of two such voluntary reviewers can turn any clumsily chiseled block into elegant, bulletproof code ready for use.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rumors about a 'toxic atmosphere' are at least greatly exaggerated. I can't speak for all language communities, but both ruby<\/em>, and elixir<\/em> segments are extremely friendly. To encounter reluctance to help, one would need to demand in an ultimatum form to write code for a homework task, carelessly throwing out something like:<\/p>\n

I need to calculate a sum of all prime numbers less than 100. The solution must not use core iterators. How do I do that?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yes, such 'questions' do come up, and they get downvoted. I see no issue with this; SO<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s not a free service where people suffering from an excess of free time solve others\u2019 homework for no charge.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no need to be shy about poor English or insufficient experience at all.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Career bonuses<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

I have a pretty active profile on GitHub, but I only felt the true influx of headhunters when I entered the top 20 and my avatar appeared on the main pages of the corresponding languages. I'm not looking for a job and I don't plan to change jobs in the foreseeable future, but all these offers help maintain my self-esteem and create a foundation for the future; if I suddenly feel like changing jobs, I won't have to worry about the job search.<\/p>\n

It doesn't take much time<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

I've often heard from different people that SO<\/em> only the lazy respond, while true professionals code from morning till night for business needs. I don't know, maybe there are people somewhere who can code non-stop for sixteen hours straight, but I definitely don't belong to that group. I need breaks. A perfect work break that isn't too relaxing and doesn't lead to endless procrastination is 'answering a couple of questions.' On average, it brings in a few dozen reputation points a day.<\/p>\n

Helping people is good. I\u2019m glad that, in addition to ordinary face-to-face teaching, I can help\u2014 and I do help\u2014random people from Wyoming, Kinshasa, and Vietnam. <\/p>\n

Am I competent enough to answer questions?<\/h3>\n

<\/p>\n

Yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We all make mistakes, and if that happens\u2014 the community will correct it. I should note: it doesn\u2019t secretly harm karma, but rather downvotes the answer (in the vast majority of cases\u2014 with an explanation of what went wrong here). A downvoted answer is worth deleting, and the downvotes will be reversed. (Deleted answers are still visible to people with a higher reputation, 10000<\/em>, but believe me, they have seen much worse).<\/p>\n

I find it important and necessary to participate in making the world better, and answering questions is a good way to do it without leaving my work chair.
