One of the issues with Linux for over 10 years has been temperature control of SATA\/SCSI disks. The problem was that this was implemented by third-party utilities and daemons rather than the kernel, so they had to be installed separately, granted access, and so on. But now, it seems that the situation will change.<\/p>\n

\"Linux<\/p>\n

It is reported<\/a><\/noindex>, as in the Linux 5.5 kernel it is now possible to monitor the temperature of NVMe drives without root access for monitoring applications like smarttools and hddtemp. In Linux 5.6, there will be an in-kernel driver for temperature monitoring and support, including for older SATA\/SCSI disks. This should enhance safety and simplify operations overall.<\/p>\n

In the upcoming version, the drivetemp driver will transmit information about the temperature of hard drives\/SSD drives through the common HWMON infrastructure. Programs currently operating in user space and utilizing HWMON\/sysfs interfaces will be able to report temperatures of SATA disks.<\/p>\n

It is possible that in the future problems with native monitoring of other parameters of processors and other components under Linux, such as voltage, power consumption, and so on, will be addressed. <\/p>\n
