The teams of developers and designers from Canonical responsible for the visual style and desktop in Ubuntu, plan<\/a><\/noindex> will implement a new default theme in Ubuntu 20.04 that continues the evolution of the current theme Yaru<\/a><\/noindex>, starting from Ubuntu 18.10. If the current version of Yaru offers two themes \u2014 dark (dark headers, dark background, and dark controls) and light (dark headers, light background, and light controls), the new theme will introduce a third, fully light variant. Among other color changes, there is also a plan to replace the green background of the toggle switches with an eggplant color.<\/p>\n

Experiments are also underway to introduce new directory icons that can be associated with Ubuntu and that will have adequate contrast when displayed on light and dark backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, users will be presented with an updated interface for changing theme options. This interface is planned to be expanded in the future to allow selective theme changes for individual elements, for example, the option to change just the appearance of the top panel or pop-up notifications. Necessary changes are planned to enable theme swapping on the fly, without logging out, for GNOME Shell. <\/p>\n

In preparing the new theme, the task is to maintain brand recognition while simplifying the validation of rendering for third-party applications with this theme. To facilitate testing without booting Ubuntu in a separate virtual machine, the Yaru theme is already available in Flatpak format for testing in Alpine<\/a><\/noindex> and in the AUR repository Arch Linux<\/a><\/noindex>. The new theme aims to continue the convergence of Yaru with the default GNOME theme (Adwaita). To track discrepancies, a handler has been implemented based on GitHub Actions that automatically translates all changes in Adwaita into pull requests sent to the Yaru repository. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, GNOME developers have published<\/a><\/noindex> demonstrated a prototype of the updated GNOME Shell theme, which is planned for release in GNOME 3.36. Besides the overall polishing of the theme<\/a><\/noindex>, visual changes are most noticeable in the calendar\/notification area (shadows have been added) and in search (Search Overview, background has been changed and results are now grouped). Icon rendering has been optimized and unnecessary re-renders have been eliminated.<\/p>\n
