I suggest you think about the flow of money within the company. I, you, your neighbors, your boss – all of us are in the path of money.

We tend to see money in the form of tasks. You might not think of them as money.

If you’re a programmer, you see requirements, technologies used, client complexity, time estimates in hours or points.

If you’re a manager, you view the task as a piece of the completed plan, a headache with selecting an analyst and executor, calculating your percentage of the revenue.

But you don't look at the task as money. Now try to do that. Just like this: a task is money. Imagine that a client walked into your office with a bundle of cash – wanting to hand it over to you. Not just like that – this isn’t some fool; he’s a normal, reasonable person with a bundle of cash. What will be the journey of this person and his money?<noindex></noindex>

He'll probably approach the manager – programmers don't like to talk to clients, do they? They'll talk, the manager will jot down the request in a notebook, and promise to solve the client's problem.

The client is impatient – he wants to give his money. But for now, there’s no one to give it to, and nothing to give it for. He nudges the manager on the shoulder – well, buddy, who do I give the money to? No, says the manager, wait, it’s too early.

The client sighs and sits down on a little chair in the corner of the office, placing the bundle of cash on his lap. Meanwhile, the manager goes off to the next meeting, or talks about something with other managers and programmers. And the money rests on his lap.

So the day goes by (imagine such a client came in, like a grandmother at a soup kitchen). He merely sheds tears on his bundle of cash, waiting, waiting, waiting…

The manager sometimes remembers about the task, but he still doesn’t know what to do with it. He should really structure the information a bit, at least conduct a superficial analysis, otherwise the programmers won’t take it. But there’s no time… Let the client wait a bit longer, and let the money rest.

Finally, the client can’t take it anymore, approaches the manager, and yells – who should I give the money to??!!... Just a moment, replies the manager, and without structuring the task, he goes off to find someone to execute it. The client, satisfied with at least some movement, sits back down in his chair. The money waits.

Choosing a contractor is not a smooth process. No one wants to help the client part with their money. Some say – clarify the request, nothing is clear. Others say – you need an analyst. Third ones say – I'm busy. Several days pass like this. And the money waits.

Finally, after much trouble, a contractor is found. He gets up from his chair, approaches the client, and re-clarifies all the details of the task. The client asks again – who should I give the money to? Too soon – says the programmer. Just wait a bit, sir.

For several days, a wad of money sits in line. No one knows the order in the queue, not even the programmer. Periodically, there are downtimes. For example, when something is unclear, and it's embarrassing to ask, as they'll realize you don't know the topic. They might even send you away, albeit subtly.

Sometimes the programmer waits until the last moment – until the client flares up again, rushes in, and smacks him on the head with the wad of money. This wad is already burning in his hands, and he truly wants to get rid of the heavy burden. But he can't – a person who needs this money has yet to be found. Everyone runs away from it like it's the plague.

And then, at last, a miracle happens! The task is solved! The client rushes, like stung by a bee, to hand over the money!

Immediately, another miracle occurs – all participants in the process, as if by the wave of a magic wand, also saw the money! While the money was in the client's hands, labeled 'task', no one noticed it. However, when the bills started to rustle pleasantly, everyone remembered why they came to work.

Think it's a lie? There's actually statistics, which not everyone considers – the lifespan of tasks, especially in monetary terms. Usually, people settle for some SLAs or volumetric metrics – how many tasks were completed, how many of those on time, etc.

What’s more interesting here? Real work on a task can take only a couple of hours. For two hours of work, a week, two weeks, or even a month can go by. All tasks are stuck in long queues, like elderly women at a clinic. Around us, in all our offices, there are wads of money that we don't need. Money is sticking out from all seams, floating in sinks, hanging from the ceiling, and blowing across the floor in the draft. We fear this money, postpone it for later, kick it around to each other, hide it out of sight under felt, and don’t let it live its full life.

It somewhat reminds of a Soviet joke:
A spy comes to Lubyanka to surrender, and they ask him: 'Which country are you from?'
- 'From the USA.'
- 'Then you need to go to the fifth office.'
There they ask: 'Do you have any weapons?'
- 'Yes.'
- 'Then you need to go to the seventh.'
There they ask: 'Do you have any means of communication?'
- 'Yes.'
- 'Then you need to go to the tenth.'
- 'Well, do you have a mission?'
- 'Of course, I do.'
- 'Then go and carry it out without interrupting our work.'

Try to look at tasks as money. Try to put yourself in the client's shoes. Visit a clinic and see a general practitioner if you've forgotten those feelings—complete helplessness, even when you have money.

Try, at least mentally, to think of tasks as money. Not 'how many tasks do I have in progress?', but 'how much money do I have in progress?'. Not 'how long has this task been pending?', but 'how long have I not taken money from the client's hands?'. Not 'I'll think about this task on Friday,' but 'I don't need money, let it stay with the client, or someone else will get it.'. Not 'Oh man, what a confusing task, what should I do with it?', but 'Wow, how much money did he bring, not even realizing it!'.

Not only the volume of money matters, but also the speed at which it transitions from the client to you. For the client, this is the speed of solving their problem. They are ready to part with their money the moment they pick up the phone, walk into the office, or send an email.

There is a positive note in this: we are all like this. Every one of our and your competitors. They all say they want money. And they also say they lack specialists. That the market is stagnating. That the vendor is to blame. That clients are throwing them out. That the youth are becoming more and more foolish every year. That the macroeconomic situation, the central bank's politics, demographics, blah-blah-blah, and a bunch of smart words.

Yet they are laden with money like a dog with fleas.
