For several years now, major corporations have been involved in the development of the Linux kernel and open source in general. The Phoronix resource reported<\/a><\/noindex> on how AMD and Intel developers have improved free software over the past 10 years, analyzing information on the number of changes (Git commits) made by representatives of the companies.<\/p>\n

Researchers counted the unique email addresses of developers from each corporate domain. It turns out that Intel experienced steady growth in this area up to and including 2016. Until that point, both the number of addresses and the number of Git commits created in their name were increasing. However, in the later years, Intel employees' activity slightly declined.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the number of specialists from AMD contributing to the Linux kernel is steadily increasing, although it is still significantly lower than the number from the «blue team». However, it is thanks to them that progress in graphics has been evident. In particular, this has allowed for the development of the Radeon Software Linux driver.<\/p>\n

When it comes to working with the CPU, AMD mainly relies on its partners at SUSE and other companies. One can only hope that this will lead to an increase in the number of fixes in the kernel, as over the past 3 years, the primary focus of the «red team» has been on graphics.
