In general, the Hand of God is one of the most famous soccer goals in history, scored by Argentine Diego Maradona in the 51st minute of the quarter-final match of the 1986 World Cup against England. 'Hand' because the goal was scored with his hand.<\/p>\n

In our team, we refer to the Hand of God as the help of an experienced employee to an inexperienced one in solving a task. The experienced employee is, accordingly, called Maradona, or simply M. This is one of the key methods to enhance efficiency in scenarios with underqualified staff. Well, it just so happens that we have many interns on our team. I\u2019m putting this to the test.<\/p>\n

According to statistics, the need for assistance is not very high. The 'average ticket' is 13 minutes \u2013 from when M gets off the chair to when he returns to the chair. Everything is included here \u2013 understanding the task, discussions, debugging, architectural design, and casual conversation.<\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n

Initially, the time variance for assistance was significant, up to 1 hour, but gradually it has narrowed, and now it rarely exceeds half an hour. It takes a few minutes of M\u2019s time for a task to move forward or even be successfully completed. There are cases of this.<\/p>\n

The key trick: accounting for and limiting time for 'Maradonism'. Until you start counting the minutes, it seems that helping others takes a lot of time. But when you record it, it turns out that it\u2019s not so bad.<\/p>\n

For example, I work part-time as a Maradona in the team. I set the limit \u2013 3 hours a day for all employees. I thought it would be too little. It turned out that even 3 hours is more than enough, as the average consumption is 2 hours a day.<\/p>\n

Accounting for and limiting the time works magically on employees. Anyone who asks for help understands that they must use time efficiently because there is a limit \u2013 one for all, and it\u2019s not beneficial to waste M\u2019s time. Therefore, casual conversations have significantly decreased, which, of course, saddens me.<\/p>\n

In general, the Hand of God is a slippery technique. It seems that the employee should figure everything out themselves, solve all problems, understand the entire context. But there is one unpleasant truth \u2013 neural connections.<\/p>\n

The brain works like a simple machine \u2013 it remembers the path and the result. If a person has followed a particular path and it led to a positive outcome, a neural connection is formed saying, 'this is how it should be done.' And vice versa.<\/p>\n

Now, imagine a trainee or a novice programmer. They are sitting alone and solving a problem without any specifications. The client sets a goal, but the programmer chooses the way to achieve it.<\/p>\n

He doesn't have many options to choose from, as he doesn't know any solutions to the problem. He lacks experience. So, he starts looking for a solution by trial and error, experimenting, searching the internet, etc.<\/p>\n

Eventually, he finds some option, tries it out, and then \u2013 bam! \u2013 it works! What will the employee do? Ideally, he will look at what other solutions exist, assess his code, make a decision about the correctness of the architecture and the justification for interfering with others' objects and modules.<\/p>\n

But let me remind you \u2013 for our person, all these words mean nothing. They simply don't know what is being discussed. Therefore, he, like, excuse me, a monkey, will just remember the option that led to success. A neural connection will either form or strengthen (if it had been formed earlier).<\/p>\n

The further it goes, the worse it gets. A person will be stuck in their own bubble because there will be very few reasons to step out of it. As we mentioned in the section about code quality, no one will ever tell the programmer that he is writing bad code. Clients don\u2019t understand this, and other programmers rarely look at someone else's code \u2013 there\u2019s no reason to.<\/p>\n

So returning to the original thesis that a person must figure everything out on their own \u2013 unfortunately, this is not a great method. At least in conditions involving interns.<\/p>\n

This is where the Hand of God comes to the rescue. It suggests the direction for finding a solution, gives advice on programming languages, provides options, predicts based on experience which solution will definitely not work, critiques the code, and tells where to borrow ready-made code.<\/p>\n

Essentially, the intern needs very little. As a rule, they get stuck on simple issues. This is simply because they don\u2019t know, for example, how to navigate to function descriptions, format the code, or are unaware of the existence of moment.js or ways to debug services in Chrome. They only need a little push to move forward.<\/p>\n

The value of the hours spent searching for this information independently is zero. From a business perspective, it is akin to theft. The company has already paid Maradona for acquiring this expertise.<\/p>\n

And all of this averages out to 13 minutes. Or 2 hours a day.<\/p>\n

Yes, let me remind you: the Hand of God is needed in a timely manner. It would be amusing to see Maradona walk onto the football field after the match and score a goal with his hand.<\/p>\n

UPD: I forgot to mention what is happening with M's productivity.<\/p>\n

Strangely enough, with the onset of this activity, productivity increased by 1.5 to 2 times. The overall productivity of the team has increased even more.<\/p>\n

I am currently testing fast switching techniques on M. If it doesn't die, I will write when I gather some statistics, including about the second M, who is currently undergoing an internship.
