For those who haven't yet had the chance to review them, and for everyone interested in industry innovations, I will briefly enumerate the new capabilities of Veeam Backup &amp; Replication today and elaborate on one of the key features.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/008503029e0e8d421b59353f82918ff0.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nSo, welcome to the details.<br \/>\n<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"habracut\"><\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cAll works are good\u2014choose according to taste\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>\nIndeed, all the development teams have contributed to this anniversary release. There is a set of features for every potential client that is necessary for their infrastructure. Here is just a partial list of the innovations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backup for NAS and file shares<\/li>\n<li>Data Integration API<\/li>\n<li>Linux VIX and backup proxy for Linux<\/li>\n<li>Support for block cloning on XFS<\/li>\n<li>Updated Cloud Tier and S0BR repository<\/li>\n<li>Backup repository on NFS<\/li>\n<li>Working with NetApp ONTAP SVM<\/li>\n<li>RMAN Plugin for Solaris<\/li>\n<li>Archiving backups of transaction logs (transaction logs backup copy job)<\/li>\n<li>Jobs with GFS Retention Policy for Primary Backup Jobs<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced WAN accelerator<\/li>\n<li>Improved backup for virtual infrastructures on the Nutanix AHV platform<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nAnd these are just the innovations in Veeam Backup &amp; Replication! The upcoming version of Veeam Availability Suite implies a new Veeam ONE and new Veeam Agents. We are undoubtedly looking forward to many interesting developments\u2014but let's begin in order.<\/p>\n<h2>Backup for NAS and file shares<\/h2>\n<p>\nThis functionality has been anticipated for a long time, and our engineers have worked hard on it for several months. Users will receive a toolkit with very flexible options for backing up and restoring files and folders, all built on an understandable and scalable architecture and in a familiar interface.<\/p>\n<p>With the kind permission of our Vanguard, Evgeny Elizarov (<noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/habr.com\/ru\/users\/korp\/\" class=\"user_link\">KorP<\/a><\/noindex>), who attended the Veeam Vanguards forum at the end of 2019, I am sharing a link to his <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.korphome.ru\/2019\/10\/24\/veeam-v10-%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B7%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B2%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B5-%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%BF%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5-nas-%D0%B8-%D1%84%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%8B%D1%85-%D1%88\/\">quite detailed article<\/a><\/noindex> about this feature. <\/p>\n<p>I will also briefly discuss the operation scheme and the procedure for configuring this type of backup. <\/p>\n<h2>How It Works<\/h2>\n<p>\nThe overall operation scheme is shown below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/842f4052dc16bfa26406faa39830201e.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nAs we can see, the following components are involved in the backup process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Source file storage (NAS, SMB share)<\/li>\n<li>Veeam Backup &amp; Replication server, responsible for management<\/li>\n<li>File Backup Proxy auxiliary proxy server, which performs data transfer during backup, including enumeration, reading, writing, compression, decompression, encryption, and decryption. (This component is identical to the well-known backup proxy.)<\/li>\n<li>Backup repository where backups and metadata files are stored, describing the original structure of the share and the location of the corresponding files and folders in backups. <\/li>\n<li>Cache repository: this holds a snapshot of the file tree taken during the last backup run. This speeds up incremental passes significantly, as there's no need to compare each source folder with what's included in the backup. It also accelerates the file recovery process. This repository can be hosted on a directly connected physical or virtual Windows or Linux server, or you can also use NAS (or SMB share). It is recommended to place such a repository on SSD, closer to the share.\n<p><i>Note:<\/i> In this role, you can use an existing Veeam repository in the infrastructure that stores virtual machine backups. However, note that SOBR\/Deduplication storage\/Cloud repository cannot be used as such a repository.\n<\/li>\n<li>Archive repository, if there is a need \u2014 and there's often a need \u2014 for long-term storage. Here, you can employ inexpensive storage systems and set up regular archiving of backups from the main repository, as will be shown below.\n<p><i>Note:<\/i> Rotated drives are not supported as repositories.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThe main stages of the process briefly look like this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Veeam Backup &amp; Replication initiates enumeration and builds the folder and file tree in the source share. <\/li>\n<li>These actions are performed by the file proxy, which transmits the constructed structure to the cache repository for storage.<\/li>\n<li>When the file proxy receives a new structure, it compares it with the previous one stored in the repository. If changes are detected, the cache repository sends a request for its resources to the backup repository.<\/li>\n<li>The file proxy begins reading new data from the source share and transmitting it to the backup repository. They are sent, being \"packed\" into BLOBs: each BLOB contains backup data in the form of files sized at 64 Mb. Metadata files are also saved. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nLet's see how all this can be configured in the interface.<\/p>\n<h2>Configuring file backup in the Veeam console<\/h2>\n<p>\nFirst, you need to configure the necessary components: proxy, file share, and repository.<\/p>\n<h3>Configuring the file proxy<\/h3>\n<p>\nA Windows server can be used as a proxy for file backups \u2014 it just needs to be x64, and preferably running Windows 2012R2 or later if you want to back up CIFS shares using VSS. <\/p>\n<p>This machine should already be included in the backup infrastructure, or you can add a new server \u2014 to do this in the view, <b>Backup Infrastructure<\/b> you need to right-click on the node <b>Backup Proxies<\/b> and select the command <b>Add file backup proxy<\/b>. Then, we go through the steps of the wizard, indicating:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The name of the new proxy<\/li>\n<li>Maximum concurrent tasks (1 task = 1 source share). The default value is calculated automatically based on available resources. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nAt this step <b>Traffic Rules<\/b> set up rules for processing network traffic, just as we normally do for proxies.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/815e2c97cf75dff1da58baf0b1868f55.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3>Adding the source share<\/h3>\n<p>\nIn the view <b>Inventory<\/b> a new node has appeared \u2014 <b>File Shares<\/b>, as well as corresponding commands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Add file share<\/b> \u2014 add a new share<\/li>\n<li><b>Create job<\/b> \u2014 create a backup job<\/li>\n<li><b>Restore<\/b> \u2014 perform recovery from backup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nWe add the file share to the infrastructure in the following way:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>After clicking on the node <b>File Shares<\/b> you need to select the command <b>Add file share<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>We choose the type of object that we will be adding.\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/68e5998d05cbd7a96f85562a83bf9b9a.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nYou can select as the source file storage:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Windows or Linux file server.<\/li>\n<li>An NFS share \u2014 versions 3.0 and 4.1 are supported.<\/li>\n<li>An SMB (CIFS) share, with backups supported from Microsoft VSS snapshots for SMB3.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nFor example, let's choose the SMB share option.<\/p>\n<p><i>Note:<\/i> When specifying an account for accessing the source share, ensure that this account has at least read permissions (and write permissions if you want to restore). Also, do not forget that the used proxy servers should also have read permissions. \n<\/li>\n<li>If you want to use snapshots for backup, then you should click <b>Advanced<\/b> and specify what type of snapshots to use \u2014 VSS or storage.\n<p><i>Note:<\/i> VSS support requires proper configuration of the File Backup Proxy. If you want to use storage snapshots, you will need to configure their creation on your storage side. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/79d4b0de88c45baf0eb9688bd61050b4.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>The next step is to set the processing settings:\n<ul>\n<li>Specify which file proxy we plan to use \u2014 by default, all available proxies will be used (<b>All proxies<\/b>).<\/li>\n<li>Specify the path to the cache repository \u2014 <b>Cache repository<\/b>. Remember that SOBR\/Deduplication\/Cloud cannot be used as such a repository.\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/636db5b8cc895205ee79c87bfe99fb12.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/>\n <\/li>\n<li>Using the setting <b>Backup I\/O control<\/b>, we select the preferred characteristic for performing operations during backup. \n<ul>\n<li><b>Lower impact<\/b> (least impact on your NAS) \u2014 processing read requests will be single-threaded; <\/li>\n<li><b>Faster backup<\/b> (high speed) \u2014 accordingly, multithreading; applicable to high-performance storages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nWhich option is better to use in your infrastructure can be determined through testing. However, the general principle is as follows: if you have a storage system designed for enterprise infrastructures, you can confidently set <b>Faster backup<\/b>, but if you have a modest home-level NAS, then, of course, we focus on <b>Lower impact<\/b>.\n <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then we say <b>Apply<\/b>, complete the steps of the wizard \u2014 and see our file share in the Veeam Backup infrastructure tree.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3>Creating a backup job<\/h3>\n<p>\nNow we need to create a backup job. From the menu <b>Backup Job<\/b> Clone <b>File share<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The job setup wizard starts. In it, we first specify the name of the new job, and then at the step <b>Files and Folders<\/b> \u2014 what we specifically want to back up. <\/p>\n<p>If we want to set include\/exclude filters, we click the button <b>Advanced<\/b>. By default, all contents will be backed up.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1da7bad02286a000806afd322f2671b3.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nThen we proceed to the step <b>Storage<\/b>, where we set storage settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backup repository \u2014 path to the repository<\/li>\n<li>Keep all versions of each file for N days \u2014 short-term storage period, i.e. how long to keep all versions of backed-up files in the repository in case recovery is necessary (by default, 28 days \u2014 yes, for files we count not 'restore points', but just days).<\/li>\n<li>If long-term storage is also needed, check the box <b>Keep file versions history<\/b> and specify how long to keep old versions of files, which ones and where (here you can specify not the main, but rather an auxiliary storage, which can be configured in the next step).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/2d3c5ec3747999eae6019a1a4e5b2fdc.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nTo choose which files to organize for long-term storage, click on <b>Choose<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/4f8c3b7d10e295e8de807f22211d30fe.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nHere, in addition to the inclusive\/exclusive mask filter, you can also separately adjust how many versions to keep for active files and for deleted files (fields <b>Active file versions to keep<\/b> and <b>Deleted file versions to keep<\/b>, respectively). Of course, all these settings need to be aligned with your data availability policy. <\/p>\n<p>Click <b>OK<\/b> and return to the wizard step.<\/p>\n<p>Familiar notification settings, custom scripts, etc., are available by clicking on <b>Advanced<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>If you need long-term storage on a secondary archival repository, proceed to step <b>Secondary Target<\/b>. Data archiving will start after the backup completes. <\/p>\n<p>This is also a small innovation. In fact, these are the known Backup Copy tasks, but now integrated into the main process, meaning there\u2019s no need to create a separate one.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to additionally configure the storage policy, encryption, and duration of the archiving window for a specific repository, select the repository from the list and click <b>Edit<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/d33b25b589bcbaf445a33bc081756bb9.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nNext, configure the schedule \u2014 everything is as usual here.<\/p>\n<p>And on the last step, verify the settings and, if necessary, select immediate start (<b>Run the job when I click Finish<\/b>), after which you can monitor the backup process:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/b743dbe0bad73027daab994053bd2744.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Recovery options<\/h2>\n<p>\nRecovery is possible in three modes: you can restore the entire share to a specific point in time, choose specific files for recovery, or restore all files that have changed since the backup.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The file share is restored completely to the state it was in when it was backed up and reached the selected restore point. All files and folders will be restored; you can recover them to the original or a different location:\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/60a3d72f0ecccdabe34190ca6ce7012c.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/>\n <\/li>\n<li>Rollback to the selected point in time by restoring only changed files: it\u2019s understandable \u2014 first, select the desired point in time, then the files\/folders you want to restore.\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/65f81c6b9004bb399a2cb71d3622bcb3.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThe logic for choosing the restore point has slightly changed. After starting the recovery wizard, you can select:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Latest Restore Point<\/b> \u2014 recovery from the latest backup in the selected mode.<\/li>\n<li><b>Selected restore point<\/b> \u2014 if you missed the restore point, you can now select it again directly in the wizard (previously, you had to go back to the main interface for this).<\/li>\n<li><b>All Time<\/b> \u2014 in this mode, you can see the entire history of backups for the share, plus you can restore from the archival storage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nAdditionally, you can specify the version of the object being restored:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Allow me to present: Veeam Availability Suite v10\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/b661cc692d1c6360ab9481214fc32562.png\" style=\"display:block;margin: 0 auto;\" \/><br \/>\n<br \/>\nFor today, that's all.
