OpenWifi allows the creation of a fully controlled implementation of all components of a wireless device, including low-level layers that in standard wireless adapters are realized at the level of chips that are inaccessible for auditing. The code <noindex>of software components</noindex>, as well as <noindex>schematics</noindex> (Verilog) of hardware blocks based on FPGA is distributed under the AGPLv3 license.

The hardware component of the demonstrated working prototype is based on the Xilinx Zynq FPGA and the AD9361 universal transceiver (RF). OpenWifi uses the SoftMAC architecture, which implies the implementation of the core wireless 802.11 (high-MAC) stack on the driver side and the presence of a low-MAC layer on the FPGA side. The wireless stack uses the mac80211 subsystem provided by the Linux kernel. Interaction with SDR is done through a special driver.

<noindex></noindex>

Main Features:

Full support for 802.11a/g and partial support for 802.11n MCS 0~7 (currently only PHY rx).
