Developers of the open-source microkernel operating system Genode OS Framework<\/a><\/noindex> have formed<\/a><\/noindex> operating system release Sculpt 20.02<\/a><\/noindex>. Within the Sculpt project, based on Genode technologies, a general-purpose operating system is being developed that can be used by everyday users for routine tasks. The project's source code is distributed<\/a><\/noindex> is available under the AGPLv3 license. A LiveUSB image<\/a><\/noindex>, with a size of 26 MB. It supports operation on systems with Intel processors and graphics subsystems with VT-d and VT-x extensions enabled.<\/p>\n

The new release is notable<\/a><\/noindex> with the addition of a working graphical file manager, a redesigned interactive interface for administration (system parameters editor), support for virtual desktops, and optimization of virtual machine monitor performance (based on VirtualBox). The system monitoring utilities, Unix runtime, and GUI components have been updated.
\nThe release also includes improvements introduced in February<\/a><\/noindex> the Genode platform update, such as support for 64-bit ARM processors i.MX and porting of the sound driver from OpenBSD 6.6.<\/p>\n

The system comes with the Leitzentrale graphical interface, allowing for standard system administration tasks. In the upper left corner of the graphical interface, there is a menu with tools for managing users, connecting storage devices, and configuring network connections. In the center, there is a configurator for assembling the system's components, which provides<\/a><\/noindex> displays an interface in the form of a graph, defining the relationships between system components. Users can interactively delete or add components, defining the composition of the system environment or virtual machines.<\/p>\n

At any moment, users can switch to console management mode, which provides greater flexibility in management. The traditional desktop can be accessed by running the TinyCore Linux distribution in a Linux virtual machine. In this environment, Firefox and Aurora browsers, a Qt-based text editor, and various applications are available. Command-line utilities can be launched in a noux environment. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s recall that Genode provides<\/a><\/noindex> unified infrastructure for creating user applications that run on top of the Linux kernel (32 and 64 bits) or microkernels<\/a><\/noindex> NOVA (x86 with virtualization), seL4 (x86_32, x86_64, ARM), Muen (x86_64), Fiasco.OC (x86_32, x86_64, ARM), L4ka::Pistachio (IA32, PowerPC), OKL4, L4\/Fiasco (IA32, AMD64, ARM), and directly executable kernels for ARM and RISC-V platforms. The paravirtualized Linux kernel L4Linux, running on top of the Fiasco.OC microkernel, allows standard Linux programs to run in Genode. The L4Linux kernel does not interact directly with the hardware but uses Genode services through a set of virtual drivers. <\/p>\n

Various Linux and BSD components have been ported to Genode, ensuring support for Gallium3D, integrating Qt, GCC, and WebKit, and enabling the organization of hybrid Linux\/Genode software environments. A port of VirtualBox has been prepared, which operates on top of the NOVA microkernel. A large number of applications have been adapted to run directly atop the microkernel and the Noux environment, which provides OS-level virtualization. For unported programs, there is a mechanism for creating application-level virtual environments that allows programs to run in a virtual Linux environment using paravirtualization. <\/p>\n
