Tavis Ormandy (Tavis Ormandy<\/a><\/noindex>), a security researcher from Google, is developing the project LoadLibrary<\/a><\/noindex>, aimed at porting DLL libraries compiled for Windows for use in Linux applications. The project provides a wrapper library that allows the loading of PE\/COFF formatted DLL files and the invocation of their defined functions. The PE\/COFF loader is based on the code ndiswrapper<\/a><\/noindex>. The project's code is distributed<\/a><\/noindex> is licensed under GPLv2.<\/p>\n

LoadLibrary handles the loading of the library into memory and importing existing symbols, providing a Linux application with an API similar to dlopen. The plug-in code can be debugged using gdb, ASAN, and Valgrind. There is provision for modifying executable code at runtime through hook attachment and patching (runtime patching). Exception handling and unwinding for C++ are supported.<\/p>\n

The project's goal is to organize scalable and efficient distributed fuzz testing of DLL libraries in a Linux-based environment. Conducting fuzzing and coverage testing on Windows does not achieve the required efficiency and often necessitates running a separate virtualized instance of Windows, especially when analyzing complex products such as antivirus software that operate at both the kernel and user space levels. With LoadLibrary, Google researchers are searching for vulnerabilities in video codecs, antivirus scanners, data unpacking libraries, image decoders, and more. <\/p>\n

For example, using LoadLibrary, the Windows Defender antivirus engine was successfully ported for operation in Linux. Analyzing mpengine.dll, which forms the core of Windows Defender, enabled the examination of a large number of complex handlers for various formats, filesystem emulators, and language interpreters that could potentially provide vectors for possible<\/a><\/noindex> attacks<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n

LoadLibrary has also been utilized in identifying remote vulnerabilities<\/a><\/noindex> in the Avast antivirus package. Examination of the DLL from this antivirus revealed that the key privileged scanning process includes a full JavaScript interpreter used to emulate the execution of third-party JavaScript code. This process is not isolated in a sandbox environment, does not drop privileges, and analyzes unverified external data from the file system and intercepted network traffic. Since any vulnerability in this complex and unprotected process could potentially lead to remote compromise of the entire system, a special shell was developed based on LoadLibrary. avscript<\/a><\/noindex> for analyzing vulnerabilities in the Avast antivirus scanner in a Linux-based environment.<\/p>\n
