Fedora Linux Developers intend to<\/a><\/noindex> migrate the RPM package database (rpmdb) from BerkeleyDB to SQLite. The main reason for the change is the use of an outdated version of Berkeley DB 5.x in rpmdb, which has not been maintained for several years. The transition to newer releases is hindered the licensing change<\/a><\/noindex> from Berkeley DB 6 to AGPLv3, the requirements of which also apply to applications that use BerkeleyDB as a library (RPM is provided<\/a><\/noindex> under GPLv2, while AGPL is incompatible<\/a><\/noindex> with GPLv2).<\/p>\n

Additionally, the current implementation of
\nrpmdb based on BerkeleyDB does not provide the necessary reliability as it does not utilize transactions and is unable to detect inconsistencies in the database. The changes required for using SQLite will be proposed in the release RPM 4.16<\/a><\/noindex>To convert the database format, it will be sufficient to use the command «rpmdb —rebuilddb».
\nThe new implementation of rpmdb is planned to be included in Fedora 33, while maintaining support for BerkeleyDB for compatibility. In Fedora 34, support for BerkeleyDB will be switched to read-only mode.<\/p>\n
