As they say, GNU\/Linux is great because you can set it up with a familiar Windows-like interface, or you can create something unusual and non-standard.<\/p>\n

For fans of the 'retro' style, there\u2019s good news \u2014 making your computer resemble the warm, vintage tube computers from the early '90s has become even easier.<\/p>\n

Not so Common Desktop Environment<\/strong>, or abbreviated as NsCDE<\/strong> \u2014 this is the modern version of the well-known old-school CDE environment, which has long been considered classic for Unix-like operating systems.<\/p>\n

CDE<\/strong> or Common Desktop Environment<\/strong> \u2014 this is a desktop environment for Unix and OpenVMS, built on the Motif widget toolkit. For a long time, CDE was regarded as the 'classic' environment for Unix systems. It was proprietary software for many years, and the source code of this popular '90s environment was only made publicly available in August 2012. However, it doesn\u2019t hold any practical interest today, as CDE has become irrevocably obsolete in terms of features and usability.<\/p>\n

The project is based on FVWM<\/strong>, enhanced with patches and extensions necessary for recreating the CDE interface. The settings and patches are written in Python<\/strong> and Shell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The developers aimed to create a user-friendly retro-style desktop environment that supports modern software and technologies without causing discomfort during use. During development, generators for corresponding themes were created for Xt, Xaw, Motif, GTK2, GTK3, Qt4, and Qt5, making it possible to style almost all modern programs to resemble CDE.<\/p>\n
