RHEL 7.8 installation images  <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/access.redhat.com\/downloads\/\">are<\/a><\/noindex> are available for download only to registered users of the Red Hat Customer Portal and are prepared for x86_64, IBM POWER7+, POWER8 (big endian and little endian), and IBM System z architectures. The source texts of the packages can be downloaded from <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.centos.org\/\">the Git repository<\/a><\/noindex> of the CentOS project. <\/p>\n<p>The RHEL 7.x branch is maintained parallel to the <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=50644\">RHEL 8.x<\/a><\/noindex> branch and will be supported until June 2024. The first phase of support for the RHEL 7.x branch, which included functional enhancements, has been completed. The release of RHEL 7.8 marked <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/access.redhat.com\/support\/policy\/updates\/errata\">the transition<\/a><\/noindex> the transition to maintenance mode, where priorities shifted towards bug fixes and security, with minor improvements related to support for key hardware systems. For those wishing to transition to the new branch, users will be provided the option to upgrade from Enterprise Linux 7.8 after the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.2.<\/p>\n<p>The most notable <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/access.redhat.com\/documentation\/en-us\/red_hat_enterprise_linux\/7\/html-single\/7.8_release_notes\/index\">changes<\/a><\/noindex>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> The interface for switching virtual desktops in the GNOME Classic environment has been updated; the switch button has been moved to the lower right corner and styled as a strip with thumbnails.\n<li class=\"l\"> Support for new Linux kernel parameters has been added (primarily related to managing the protection against new attacks on the CPU speculative execution mechanism): audit, audit_backlog_limit, ipcmni_extend, nospectre_v1, tsx, tsx_async_abort, mitigations.\n<li class=\"l\"> For guest systems running Windows and using the ActivClient drivers, it is now possible to provide smart card sharing.\n<li class=\"l\"> The samba package has been updated to version 4.10.4.\n<li class=\"l\"> An SHA-2 algorithm implementation optimized for IBM PowerPC processors has been added.\n<li class=\"l\"> OpenJDK now includes support for encryption using the elliptic curves secp256k1.\n<li class=\"l\"> Full support for Aero SAS adapters (drivers mpt3sas and megaraid_sas) has been provided.\n<li class=\"l\"> An EDAC (Error Detection and Correction) driver has been added for Intel ICX systems.\n<li class=\"l\"> The ability to mount partitions using the FUSE mechanism in user namespace is now implemented, which allows the use of the fuse-overlayfs command in containers without root.\n<li class=\"l\"> The limit on the number of IPC identifiers (ipcmin_extend) has been increased from 32 thousand to 16 million.\n<li class=\"l\"> Full support for Intel Omni-Path Architecture (OPA) has been provided.\n<li class=\"l\"> A new role &laquo;storage&raquo; (RHEL System Roles) has been added, which can be used to manage local storage (file systems, LVM volumes, and logical partitions) with Ansible.\n<li class=\"l\"> In SELinux, graphical session initiation has been allowed for users of the sysadm_u group.\n<li class=\"l\"> Support for DIF\/DIX (Data Integrity Field\/Data Integrity Extension) has been added for certain Host Bus Adapters (HBA). blk-mq, YUM 4, USB 3.0 in KVM, No-IOMMU for VFIO, image conversions for Debian and Ubuntu through virt-v2v, OVMF (Open Virtual Machine Firmware), systemd-importd, DAX (Direct Access to FS bypassing page cache without using block device level) in ext4 and XFS, launching the GNOME desktop using Wayland, fractional scaling in GNOME.\n<li class=\"l\"> New drivers have been included:\n<ul>\n<li> halt
