A new version of Crystal has been released, a compiled programming language with Ruby-like syntax. Its main features include a runtime with a built-in event loop, where all input-output operations are asynchronous, support for multithreading (currently enabled via a compilation flag), and an exceptionally simple and convenient interaction with C libraries.<\/p>\n
Starting from version 0.34.0, the language officially begins its steady march towards its first real release (i.e., version 1.0).<\/p>\n
In the new version of Crystal, the following changes and improvements can be noted in order of their importance:<\/p>\n

A new logging library has been added to the API Log<\/strong>, which, unlike the old version, can direct messages to different backends and filter these messages differently depending on the \"source.\"<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Remnants from the world of development in C, Errno<\/strong> and WinError<\/strong>, previously used for input-output primitives, fade into the past thanks to the exception hierarchy IO::Error<\/strong> (however, no one has prohibited the use of Errno yet).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

The automatic insertion of else nil from the case\/when\/else<\/strong>operator has been removed. This is done to exclude the accidental omission by the developer of one of the branches block<\/strong> when matching deterministic cases such as enums and traversing types from a Union. In simpler terms, this kind of code will no longer work without specifying one more block<\/strong> (when Char) or defining a else<\/strong>-branch:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

The shard manager (packets), paradoxically named shards<\/strong>, now uses a faster and more efficient dependency resolution algorithm called Molinillo, borrowed from CocoaPods (Swift) and Builder (Ruby).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

Support added LLVM 10<\/strong>, which should ideally give us some performance and stability improvements, etc.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

I would like to mention that Crystal is a language built on LLVM, allowing developers to create applications sometimes faster, easier, and more concisely than with its interpreted counterparts, while still generating fairly swift binaries. Compared to Golang, it stands out with fully-featured OOP support, generics, and a very straightforward and clear syntax. Its purpose is largely analogous to Nim, but it is clearly oriented toward practical application \"here and now,\" which is why it has in its API arsenal many well-documented, convenient, and high-quality tools supported by the language's developers, making it quite stable.<\/p>\n
