In the codebase \u201cZFS on Linux<\/a><\/noindex>\u201d, developed under the auspices of the OpenZFS<\/a><\/noindex> as a reference implementation of ZFS, accepted<\/a><\/noindex> changes that add support<\/a><\/noindex> FreeBSD operating system. The code added to \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d has been tested in the FreeBSD 11 and 12 branches. Thus, FreeBSD developers no longer need to maintain a separate synchronized branch of \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d and the development of all related FreeBSD changes will take place in the main project. Additionally, the functionality in FreeBSD of the main branch of \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d will be tested in a continuous integration system during development. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s recall that in December 2018, FreeBSD developers proposed a initiative<\/a><\/noindex> transitioning to the ZFS implementation from the project \u201cZFS on Linux<\/a><\/noindex>\u201d (ZoL), around which all recent activity related to the development of ZFS has been focused. The reason for the migration was the stagnation of the ZFS codebase from the Illumos project (a fork of OpenSolaris), which was previously used as a basis for transferring ZFS-related changes to FreeBSD. Until recently, the major contributions to support the ZFS codebase in Illumos were made by Delphix, which is developing the operating system DelphixOS<\/a><\/noindex> (a fork of Illumos). Two years ago, Delphix decided to switch to \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d, leading to the stagnation of ZFS from the Illumos project and centralizing all related development activity in the \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d project, which is now regarded as the main implementation. FreeBSD developers decided to follow the common example and not try to cling to Illumos, as this implementation is already lagging significantly in functionality and requires substantial resources for code maintenance and change transfer. \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d is now seen as the primary unified collaborative project for ZFS development. Among the features available in \u201cZFS on Linux\u201d for FreeBSD that are absent in the Illumos implementation are the multihost mode (MMP<\/a><\/noindex>, Multi Modifier Protection), an expanded quota system, dataset encryption, separate selection of allocation classes, the use of vector processor instructions to speed up RAIDZ implementations and checksum calculations, improved command-line tools, and fixes for many bugs related to race conditions and locks.<\/p>\n
