Cloudflare has gone live<\/a><\/noindex> website isBGPSafeYet.com<\/a><\/noindex>, designed to draw attention to the issue of leaking incorrect BGP routes and the potential for traffic redirection attacks using the BGP protocol. The site allows users to check the application of filtering technology by providers and assess the implementation of RPKI support. <\/p>\n

Many operators remain vulnerable to receiving BGP announcements of subnets with fabricated route length information, directing transit traffic through third-party providers. Instances of BGP being used for attacks are increasingly emerging, in which attackers compromise provider infrastructure to redirect and intercept traffic to substitute specific websites through the organization of a MiTM attack to replace DNS responses. <\/p>\n

The solution to the problem is the implementation of a BGP announcement authorization system based on RPKI (Resource Public Key Infrastructure), which allows determining whether the BGP announcement originates from the network owner or not. By using RPKI for autonomous systems and IP addresses, a chain of trust is built from IANA to regional registrars (RIRs), then to providers (LIR) and end consumers, enabling third parties to verify that the operation with the resource was performed by its owner. Unfortunately, despite the issues, RPKI is still not used by the majority of providers. The new Cloudflare service allows tracking problematic operators and drawing public attention to them.
