Collabora has announced<\/a><\/noindex> for enhancing the driver functionality Panfrost<\/a><\/noindex> on devices with Bifrost GPUs (Mali G31<\/a><\/noindex>) to a state suitable for running a 3D rendering system, including basic texture support.
\nInitially, the Panfrost driver focused primarily on implementing support for Midgard chips, but attention has now shifted to Bifrost chips, which are similar to Midgard in command stream but have significant differences in shader execution instructions and interfaces between shaders and the command stream.<\/p>\n

The developers have prepared an initial implementation of a shader compiler that supports a GPU-specific set of internal instructions for Bifrost. Future plans include adding support for extended instructions that allow for more complex shader compilation. Changes have been submitted to the Mesa codebase and will be included in the next major release 20.1.<\/p>\n

The Panfrost driver evolves based on reverse engineering of ARM's original drivers and is designed to work with chips based on the Midgard (Mali-T6xx, Mali-T7xx, Mali-T8xx) and Bifrost (Mali G3x, G5x, G7x) microarchitectures.
