In the Void Linux developer community, a conflict erupted,<\/a><\/noindex> during which Juan Romero Pardines, the project's founder, announced<\/a><\/noindex> his departure and confronted the other members. Judging by tweets<\/a><\/noindex> and the abundance of abusive remarks and threats directed at other developers, Juan had a nervous breakdown. <\/p>\n

He deleted his the repository<\/a><\/noindex> repositories on GitHub that contained his versions of the xbps, xbps-src, void-mklive, and void-runit utilities (the versions of these utilities used in Void Linux are developed in the main GitHub repository<\/a><\/noindex> of the project), and began threatening<\/a><\/noindex> with legal claims and announced<\/a><\/noindex> the possibility of revoking the license for the code he wrote (note: the code for Void Linux tools is released under a BSD license, and an already open code license cannot be revoked, so Juan can only change the license for his copy of the tools and publish future changes under a new license, but cannot prevent the continuation of development of previously published code). <\/p>\n

A few hours before his departure, Juan announced<\/a><\/noindex> proposed a reorganization of the processes related to making changes to packages. In Juan's opinion, the current decision-making scheme for approving changes needs improvement, otherwise it turns into chaos and poses the risk of significant problems when updating system libraries. As a solution, Juan suggested introducing mandatory prior review by several participants of changes made to packages that affect other packages. Not everyone agreed with this approach, fearing that the review process would reduce development efficiency and lead to conflicts among maintainers. Juan reacted quite vehemently to the disagreement, which provoked a conflict.<\/p>\n

On the Void Linux website, an explanation appeared<\/a><\/noindex> from the remaining developers, who reassured users that Juan's departure would not affect the development and state of the project. The community also apologized for Juan's abusive behavior and called for respect among each other. This is not the first strange outburst from Juan: in 2018, he did not respond for several months. did not respond<\/a><\/noindex> due to messages and left the other participants without access to infrastructure and repositories, and before that, he had not participated in development for over a year, forcing the community to self-organize, move the GitHub repositories to a new account, and take control of the infrastructure into their own hands. It is claimed that in publicly available messages from Juan, only echoes of a larger conflict can be seen, which occurred in private discussions and relates to issues in his personal life (there are reports that the aggression was provoked by an inappropriate joking mention of Juan's family problems). Many associates were dissatisfied with Juan's behavior towards other participants, his excessively categorical viewpoint, and offensive remarks in response to disagreement with his perspective. After Juan published messages<\/a><\/noindex> his intention to leave, other participants in Void Linux did not wait long and immediately revoked his access rights to the repositories and infrastructure, and after he launched insults at several participants, they imposed a ban on him.<\/p>\n

Recall that the distribution Void Linux<\/a><\/noindex> follows a model of continuous version update cycles (rolling updates, without separate distribution releases). The project uses the system manager runit<\/a><\/noindex>, employs its own package manager xbps<\/a><\/noindex> and a package build system xbps-src<\/a><\/noindex>. As a standard library instead of Glibc, there is an option to use Musl<\/a><\/noindex>. Instead of OpenSSL, LibreSSL is used.
