The RHEL 8.x branch will be supported at least until 2029.

Initially, the announcement of RHEL 8.2 was <noindex>has been published</noindex> on the Red Hat website on April 21, but the announcement was made prematurely and the repositories for installing updates were still <noindex>not ready</noindex>, and the actual release only came today. The 8.x branch is being developed according to a new predictable development cycle, implying the formation of releases every six months at a predetermined time. Cgroups v2 can be used, for example, to limit memory consumption, CPU resources, and input/output. The key difference between cgroups v2 and v1 is the application of a common cgroup hierarchy for all types of resources, instead of separate hierarchies for resource allocation for CPU, memory consumption regulation, and input/output. Separate hierarchies led to difficulties in organizing interactions between handlers and additional kernel resource costs when applying rules for a process mentioned in different hierarchies.

<noindex>Added</noindex> the Convert2RHEL tool for converting systems that use RHEL-like distributions, such as CentOS and Oracle Linux, to RHEL.

The ability to customize system-wide cryptographic policy (crypto-policies) has been added, covering TLS, IPSec, SSH, DNSSec, and Kerberos protocols. Administrators can now define their own policy or modify specific parameters of existing ones. Two new packages, setools-gui and setools-console-analyses, have been added for analyzing SELinux policies and inspecting data flows. A security profile compliant with DISA STIG (Defense Information Systems Agency) recommendations has been added. A new utility, oscap-podman, has been introduced for scanning container contents for vulnerable software versions.

A new utility, Healthcheck, has been added to the identity management tools, allowing for the detection of issues in IdM (Identity Management) environments. Support for roles and Ansible modules has been provided to simplify IdM installation and management.

The web console layout has been revamped to utilize the PatternFly 4 interface, similar to the OpenShift 4 interface design. A user inactivity timeout has been introduced, after which the session with the web console is terminated. Support for authentication using client certificates has been added. The sections for managing storages and virtual machines have been updated.

The interface for switching virtual desktops in the GNOME Classic environment has been updated; the switch button has been moved to the lower right corner and styled as a strip with thumbnails.

The DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) graphics subsystem has been synchronized with the Linux kernel version 5.1. The graphics drivers have been updated, adding support for Intel Comet Lake H and U (HD Graphics 610, 620, 630), Intel Ice Lake U (HD Graphics 910, Iris Plus Graphics 930, 940, 950), AMD Navi 10, and Nvidia Turing TU116.

The GNOME session based on Wayland is enabled by default for systems with multiple GPUs (previously, X11 was used on systems with hybrid graphics).

Support for new Linux kernel parameters related to managing the activation of protections against new attacks on the CPU speculative execution mechanism has been added: mds, tsx, mitigations.
The mem_encrypt parameter for managing the activation of AMD SME (Secure Memory Encryption) extensions has been added. The cpuidle.governor parameter for selecting the CPU idle state handler (cpuidle governor) has been introduced. The /proc/sys/kernel/panic_print parameter for configuring information output in the event of a system crash (panic state) has been added.
/proc/sys/kernel/threads-max для определения максимального числа потоков, которые может создать функция fork(). Добавлен параметр /proc/sys/net/bpf_jit_enable для управления включением JIT-компилятора для BPF.

The launch algorithm for dnf-automatic.timer has been changed to trigger the automatic update installation process. Instead of using a monotonous timer that activates at unpredictable times after booting, the specified unit now runs between 6 and 7 AM. If the system is off during this time, it will start within an hour after being turned on.

New branches of Python 3.8 (previously 3.6) and Maven 3.6 have been added to the AppStream repository. Packages have been updated to GCC 9.2.1, Clang/LLVM 9.0.1, Rust 1.41, and Go 1.13.

Updated package versions include powertop 2.11 (with support for EHL, TGL, ICL/ICX platforms), opencv 3.4.6, tuned 2.13.0, rsyslog 8.1911.0, audit 3.0-0.14, fapolicyd 0.9.1-2, and sudo 1.8.29-3.el8.
Also updated are firewalld 0.8, tpm2-tools 3.2.1, mod_md (with ACMEv2 support), grafana 6.3.6, pcp 5.0.2, elfutils 0.178, SystemTap 4.2, and 389-ds-base 1.4.2.4.
Samba 4.11.2 has been added.

New packages added include whois, graphviz-python3 (distributed through the officially unsupported CRB repository (CodeReady Linux Builder)), perl-LDAP, and perl-Convert-ASN1.

The BIND DNS server has been updated to version 9.11.13 and switched to using the GeoIP2 address-to-location binding database in libmaxminddb format instead of the deprecated GeoIP, which is no longer supported. A serve-stale (stale-answer) setting has been added to return stale DNS records if new ones cannot be obtained.

An omhttp plugin has been added to rsyslog for interaction via the HTTP REST interface.

Changes corresponding to the Linux kernel 5.5 have been transferred into the auditing subsystem.

The setroubleshoot plugin has added support for analyzing access failures due to memory shortage and for automatic responses to resolve such issues.

Users restricted by SELinux are given the ability to manage services related to user sessions. The semanage tool has added support for assessing and modifying the network ports for SCTP and DCCP (previously only TCP and UDP were supported). It ensures the processing under their own SELinux domains for services like lvmdbusd (D-Bus API for LVM), lldpd, rrdcached, stratisd, and timedatex.

Firewalld has transitioned to a JSON interface with libnftables when interacting with nftables, resulting in increased performance and reliability. Nftables now supports multidimensional types in IP sets, which can include unions and ranges. Connection tracking handlers for services running on non-standard network ports can now be used in firewalld rules.

Full support has been ensured in the kernel subsystem tc (Traffic Control).
eBPF allows the tc utility to attach eBPF programs for packet classification and to manage incoming and outgoing queues.

Stable support has been implemented for some eBPF subsystems: the BCC (BPF Compiler Collection) toolkit and library for creating BPF tracing and debugging programs, along with eBPF support in tc. The components bpftrace and eXpress Data Path (XDP) remain in Technology Preview.

Real-time operation components (kernel-rt) are synchronized with the set of patches for kernel 5.2.21-rt13.

It is now possible to run the rngd process (a daemon for feeding entropy to the pseudo-random number generator) without root privileges.

LVM has added support for the dm-writecache caching method in addition to the previously available dm-cache. Dm-cache caches the most frequently used read and write operations, while dm-writecache caches only write operations by initially placing them on fast storage SSD or PMEM and subsequently moving them to a slower disk in the background.

XFS has added support for a writeback mode that accounts for cgroup.

FUSE has added support for the copy_file_range() operation, which accelerates data copying from one file to another by performing the operation solely on the kernel side without prior reading of data into process memory. This optimization is particularly noticeable in GlusterFS.

The dynamic linker now includes the «—preload» option, allowing you to explicitly specify libraries for preloading with the application. This option enables you to avoid using the LD_PRELOAD environment variable, which is inherited by child processes.

KVM hypervisor has achieved full support for nested virtual machine execution.

New drivers have been added, including
gVNIC, Broadcom UniMAC MDIO, Software iWARP, DRM VRAM, cpuidle-haltpoll, stm_ftrace, stm_console,
Intel Trace Hub, PMEM DAX,
Intel PMC Core,
Intel RAPL,
Intel Runtime Average Power Limit (RAPL).

DSA, TLS 1.0, and TLS 1.1 have been declared obsolete, disabled by default, and are only available in the LEGACY set.

Experimental (Technology Preview) support has been provided for nmstate, AF_XDP, XDP, KTLS, dracut, kexec fast reboot, eBPF, libbpf, igc, NVMe over TCP/IP, DAX in ext4 and xfs, OverlayFS, Stratis, DNSSEC, GNOME on ARM systems, AMD SEV for KVM, Intel vGPU.

<noindex><a rel="nofollow"
