\nIf so, read on to learn how to become a mid-level DevOps engineer in six months! Finally, even if you have been working in DevOps for many years, you will still gain valuable insights from this series of articles, discovering the current state of the integration and automation industry and where it is heading. <\/p>\n

\"How<\/a><\/noindex><\/p>\n

What is it exactly?<\/h3>\n

\nFirst of all, what is DevOps? You could Google definitions and sift through all the jargon, but know that most definitions are just a jumble of words wrapped in a sleek form. Here\u2019s a distilled version of all those definitions: DevOps is a method of software delivery where the pain and responsibility are shared among all parties involved. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n

Okay, but what does this abbreviation actually mean? It means that traditionally, developers (the people creating software) were driven by incentives that significantly differed from those of Operations (the people managing the software). For example, as a developer, I want to create as many new features as quickly as possible. After all, that\u2019s my job, and that's what customers demand! However, as an Ops person, I prefer to see fewer new features because each new feature is a change, and any change can lead to issues. This misalignment of incentives is what gave rise to DevOps.<\/p>\n

DevOps aims to merge development and operations (integration and automation) into a single group. The idea is that now one group will share both the pain and the responsibility (and likely the rewards) for building, deploying, and profiting from customer-oriented software.<\/p>\n

Purists will tell you that there is no such thing as a 'DevOps engineer.' 'DevOps is a culture, not a role,' they will say. Of course, from a technical standpoint, they are right, but as is often the case, this term has evolved beyond its original meaning. So, a DevOps engineer is somewhat like a 'system engineer 2.0.' In other words, this is someone who understands the software development lifecycle and creates tools and processes for software development to address classic operational tasks.<\/p>\n

\"How
\n
\nDevOps ultimately means creating digital pipelines that take code from a developer's laptop and turn it into revenue from using the final product\u2014that's the crux of it. Note that the career path in DevOps is quite well compensated, with almost every company either \"doing DevOps\" or claiming to do so. Regardless of where these companies are located, the overall job opportunities as a DevOps professional are quite high and imply a \"fun\" and meaningful career for years to come.<\/p>\n

However, be cautious of companies hiring a 'DevOps team' or a 'DevOps department.' Strictly speaking, such things should not exist because ultimately, DevOps is still a culture and a way of delivering software, not a matter of assembling a new team or creating a department with a trendy title.<\/p>\n

Disclaimer<\/h3>\n

\nNow, let\u2019s set aside our \u2018Cool-Aid\u2019 for a moment and think about this: Have you heard the old saying, \"there are no junior DevOps engineers?\" If not, know that this is a popular trope on Reddit and StackOverflow. But what does it mean?<\/p>\n

Simply put, this phrase means that it takes many years of experience combined with a solid understanding of tools to ultimately become a truly effective Senior DevOps practitioner. Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to achieving this goal. So, this is not an attempt to game the system\u2014I don't think you can realistically pretend to be a Senior DevOps engineer with just a few months of experience in the field. Achieving a clear understanding of rapidly evolving tools and methodologies requires years of experience, and there's no way around that. However, there is a nearly agreed-upon (trendy, if you will) menu of tools and concepts used by most companies, and that's what this is about.<\/p>\n

Again, tools are different from skills, so while you're learning the tools, make sure you don't neglect your skills (surveys, networking, written communication, troubleshooting, etc.). The key is not to lose sight of what we want to find\u2014a way to create a fully automated digital pipeline that takes ideas and turns them into revenue-generating chunks of code. This is the sole and most important takeaway from this entire article!<\/p>\n

Enough chit-chat, when can I start?<\/h3>\n

\nBelow is the roadmap for 'Fundamental DevOps Knowledge.' Once you've mastered everything depicted there, you can confidently and honestly call yourself a DevOps engineer! Or a cloud engineer if you're not keen on the title 'DevOps.'<\/p>\n

\n
\nThis map reflects my (and likely the majority of people working in this space) view of what a competent DevOps engineer should know. However, this is just an opinion, and, of course, there will be dissenters. That's fine! We're not striving for perfection here; we aim for a solid foundation on which to build something real.<\/p>\n

You should go through this path gradually, layer by layer. You should start (and continue!) with the foundational basics by first learning the elements marked in blue\u2014Linux, Python, and AWS. Then, if time or job market demand permits, move on to the purple things\u2014Golang and Google Cloud. <\/p>\n

To be honest, the foundational layer is something you'll have to study endlessly. Linux OS is quite complex, and mastering it takes years. Python requires constant practice to stay up to date. AWS evolves so quickly that what you know today will only be a fraction of your overall knowledge base in a year. Once you grasp the basics, move on to a real skill set. Note that there are a total of 6 blue columns (Configuration, Version, Packaging, Deployment, Launch, Monitoring), one for each month of study.<\/p>\n

\n
\nYou may have noticed the absence of a crucial stage in our six-month pipeline \u2013 testing. I intentionally excluded it from the roadmap because writing modules, integration, and acceptance testing are challenging and traditionally fall on developers' shoulders. The omission of the 'testing' phase is justified by the fact that the goal of this roadmap is to quickly acquire basic skills and tools. The lack of testing experience, in the author's opinion, is merely a minor hurdle for the proper use of DevOps.<\/p>\n

Additionally, keep in mind that we are not learning a bunch of unrelated technical jargon here, but aiming to understand the tools that together create a coherent story. This story represents an end-to-end automation process \u2014 a digital pipeline that moves bits like an assembly line. You don\u2019t want to learn a bunch of tools and constantly get stuck! The DevOps toolbox changes rapidly, while concepts do so much less frequently. Therefore, you should aim to use tools as learning proxies for higher-level concepts.<\/p>\n

Alright, let's dig a little deeper!<\/p>\n

Fundamental knowledge<\/h3>\n

\nUnder the upper step labeled Foundation, you will see the skills that every DevOps engineer must master. These skills involve a solid understanding of the three \"pillars\" of the industry: operating system, programming language, and public cloud. These are not things you can quickly learn and move on. These skills need to be continuously improved, and mastery must be honed to stay at the forefront of the industry and keep your professional environment relevant. Let's go through them one by one.<\/p>\n

Linux is where everything operates. Can you be an outstanding DevOps practitioner while fully remaining within the Microsoft ecosystem? Of course, you can! There is no law that mandates the use of only Linux. However, note that while everything you can do in Linux can also be done in Windows, it tends to be much more painful and comes with fewer functionalities. At this point, it is safe to say that knowledge of Linux is essential to becoming a true DevOps professional, so Linux is what you should study and learn.<\/p>\n

Honestly, the best way to do this is to simply install Linux (Fedora or Ubuntu) at home and use it as much as possible. Of course, you will break a lot of things, get stuck in workflows, and have to fix everything, but you'll learn Linux!<\/p>\n

\n
\nBy the way, in North America, RedHat variants are more common, so it makes sense to start with Fedora or CentOS. If you are wondering whether to get the KDE or Gnome edition, choose KDE. That\u2019s what Linus Torvalds himself uses. <\/p>\n

Python is currently the dominant back-end language. It is easy to get started with and is widely used. Python is very popular in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning, so if you ever want to transition to another hot sector, you'll be fully prepared.<\/p>\n

\nAmazon Web Services: again, it is impossible to become an experienced DevOps professional without a solid understanding of how the public cloud works. And if you want to learn as much as possible about it, study Amazon Web Services. It is the leading player in this service area, offering the richest set of working tools.<\/p>\n

Can I start with Google Cloud or Azure instead? Of course! But considering the last financial crisis, it's important to note that AWS is the safest choice, at least as of 2018, as it allows you to register for a free account and start exploring cloud service capabilities. Furthermore, the AWS console provides users with a simple and intuitive menu for selection. The good news is that you don't need to know all of Amazon's technologies for this.<\/p>\n

\nStart with the following: VPC, EC2, IAM, S3, CloudWatch, ELB (Elastic Load Balancing behind EC2), and Security Group. These are sufficient to get started, and every modern cloud enterprise actively utilizes these tools. The official AWS training site is a great place to begin.<\/p>\n

I recommend dedicating 20-30 minutes daily to studying and practicing with Python, the Linux operating system, and the AWS cloud service, in addition to other things you'll need to learn. Overall, I believe spending an hour a day five times a week is enough to comprehend the ongoing processes in DevOps within six months or even less. There are a total of six core components, each corresponding to a month of learning. This is all you will need to gain foundational knowledge.
