Today, during the Build 2020 developer conference, Microsoft announced Project Reunion — a new initiative aimed at unifying UWP and classic Win32 applications. The company has encountered the fact that UWP apps are not as popular as initially planned. Many users still rely on Windows 7 and 8, which has led most developers to focus on creating Win32 applications.<\/p>\n

From the beginning, Microsoft promised that Win32 programs would be available in the proprietary app store, and over time, more attention has been given to this. UWP features started appearing in applications on a platform that seemed to be on the verge of obsolescence. Developers are adding Fluent Design aesthetics to Win32 applications and even recompiling them to work on ARM64 PCs.<\/p>\n

With Project Reunion, Microsoft is essentially trying to merge two application platforms. The company plans to separate the Win32 and UWP APIs from the operating system. Developers will be able to access them through the NuGet package management system, creating a common platform. Microsoft stated that it intends to ensure that new applications or updated versions of existing programs will work on all supported OS versions. It appears that older builds of Windows 10 are implied here, as Windows 7 is no longer supported.<\/p>\n

Because the Project Reunion platform will not be tied to the OS, Microsoft will be able to expand its capabilities without the need to update the operating system. An example of a feature that has been separated from the operating system is WebView2, based on Chromium.<\/p>\n
