According to reports from various online sources, Google Messages, the default messaging app on Android smartphones, may soon introduce end-to-end encryption support. Mentions of this feature were discovered in the code of one of the app's test versions.<\/p>\n

Enthusiasts have delved into the code of the internal build of Google Messages version 6.2 and discovered mentions of several new features, the most notable of which is support for end-to-end encryption when transmitting messages via the RCS protocol. At this time, there aren\u2019t enough details to say exactly how end-to-end encryption will work. It\u2019s possible that both the sender and the receiver will need to use Google Messages, although this may change once other applications gain support for end-to-end encryption.   <\/p>\n

It can be confidently stated that both the sender and recipient will require a stable internet connection to send encrypted messages over the RCS protocol. If one of the users has a poor internet connection, Google's messaging service will offer to send the message via SMS or MMS. However, before sending in this manner, the app will remind the user that messages sent via SMS and MMS are not encrypted and will ask for confirmation.<\/p>\n
