Raspberry Pi Project announced<\/a><\/noindex> an enhanced version of the Raspberry Pi 4 board, supplied with 8 GB of RAM. The cost of the new board version is<\/a><\/noindex> $75. In comparison, the boards with 2 and 4 GB of RAM are sold for $35 and $55 respectively. <\/p>\n

The chip used in the board, BCM2711, allows addressing up to 16 GB of memory, but at the time of the board's development last year, suitable LPDDR4 SDRAM chips were not available on the market. Now, Micron has released the necessary 8 GB chips, which form the basis of the new Raspberry Pi 4 version. The supply of the more energy-efficient 8 GB LPDDR4 SDRAM chip also required a slight upgrade of the power circuits and the relocation of the switching converter from the area near the USB 2.0 ports to the area near USB-C.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s recall that the Raspberry Pi 4 board is equipped with the SoC BCM2711 and includes four 64-bit ARMv8 Cortex-A72 cores, operating at a frequency of 1.5GHz, and a VideoCore VI graphics accelerator that supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and is capable of decoding H.265 video at 4Kp60 (or 4Kp30 on two monitors). The board is equipped with LPDDR4 memory, a PCI Express controller, gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports (plus two USB 2.0 ports), two Micro HDMI ports (4K), a 40-pin GPIO, DSI (for connecting a touchscreen), CSI (for connecting a camera), and a wireless communication chip that supports the 802.11ac standard, operation on 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, and Bluetooth 5.0. Power can be supplied through the USB-C port (previously USB micro-B was used), through GPIO, or via an additional PoE HAT (Power over Ethernet) module. In performance tests, the Raspberry Pi 4 outperforms the Raspberry Pi 3B+ by 2-4 times, and the Raspberry Pi 1 by 40 times.
