Developers of the open-source game engine Godot have introduced<\/a><\/noindex> the initial version of the graphical environment for developing and designing games, Godot Editor, capable of running in a web browser. The Godot engine has long provided support for exporting games to the HTML5 platform, and now it includes the capability to run in browsers and game development environments. <\/p>\n

It is noted that primary attention during development will continue to focus on the classic application, which is recommended for professional game development. The browser version is considered an auxiliary option that will allow for quick assessment of the environment's capabilities without the need to install it on a local system, simplify the development process for HTML5 games, and enable use in systems that do not allow the installation of third-party software (e.g., on school computers and mobile devices).<\/p>\n

Browser operation is implemented through compilation to intermediate code WebAssembly<\/a><\/noindex>, made possible after the introduction of thread support in WebAssembly and the addition of JavaScript SharedArrayBuffer<\/a><\/noindex> and access to the local file system (API Native FileSystem<\/a><\/noindex>). The initial version of Godot Editor for browsers<\/a><\/noindex> is operational in the latest releases of Chromium-based browsers and in nightly builds of Firefox (SharedArrayBuffer support required). <\/p>\n

The browser version is still in the early stages of development, and not all features available in the standard version are implemented. Support for launching the editor and project manager, as well as creating, editing, and running projects, is provided. Several storage providers have been made available for saving and loading files: None (data is lost after closing the tab), IndexedDB (storing small projects in the browser, up to 50 MB on desktop systems and 5 MB on mobile devices), Dropbox, and FileSystem API (access to local FS).
