iXsystems, a company developing a distribution for the rapid deployment of network storage FreeNAS and commercial products based on it like TrueNAS, announced<\/a><\/noindex> has announced the start of work on a new open project, TrueNAS SCALE. A distinctive feature of TrueNAS SCALE is the use of the Linux kernel and the Debian 11 (Testing) package base, while all previously released products from the company, including TrueOS (formerly PC-BSD), were based on FreeBSD.<\/p>\n

One of the goals for creating the new distribution is to expand scalability, simplify infrastructure management, utilize Linux containers, and focus on creating software-defined infrastructures.<\/a><\/noindex>Like in FreeNAS, TrueNAS SCALE leverages the ZFS file system implemented by the project OpenZFS<\/a><\/noindex> (the reference implementation of ZFS is proposed as ZFS On Linux<\/a><\/noindex>). TrueNAS SCALE will also use tools developed by iXsystems for FreeNAS and TrueNAS 12. <\/p>\n

Development and support for FreeNAS, TrueNAS CORE, and TrueNAS Enterprise based on FreeBSD will continue unchanged. The key idea of the initiative is that OpenZFS 2.0 will are provided with<\/a><\/noindex> support both Linux and FreeBSD, opening doors for experiments in creating a universal toolkit for NAS, independent of any specific operating system, and allowing exploration with Linux. The use of Linux will enable the realization of certain ideas that are unattainable with FreeBSD. Ultimately, solutions based on FreeBSD and Linux will coexist and complement one another, using a common codebase for the toolkit.<\/p>\n

Development of specific build scripts for TrueNAS SCALE is being conducted on GitHub.<\/a><\/noindex>In the coming quarter, we plan to publish more detailed information about the architecture and offer periodically updated test builds to familiarize users with the development progress. The first release of TrueNAS SCALE is scheduled for 2021.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth mentioning that two months ago, iXsystems announced<\/a><\/noindex> announced the merger of the free distribution FreeNAS with the commercial project TrueNAS, which expands FreeNAS capabilities for enterprises, as well as made the decision<\/a><\/noindex> the cessation of development for the TrueOS project (formerly PC-BSD).
