Moreover, this has become possible thanks to the developed open source community.

One of the stories about transitioning from macOS to Linux in this translation.

It has been nearly two years since I switched from macOS to Linux. Before that, I used Apple's operating system for 15 years. I installed my first distribution in the summer of 2018. At that time, I was still a newcomer to Linux.

Now I use Linux exclusively. There, I can do everything I want: regular internet surfing and watching Netflix, writing and editing content for my blog, and even managing a startup.
<noindex></noindex>
It is important to note that I am not a developer or an engineer! The days when it was considered that Linux was not suitable for ordinary users due to its not user-friendly interface are long gone.

Recently, there have been many discussions criticizing the macOS operating system, making more people consider the switch to Linux. I will share some tips on transitioning from macOS to Linux to help others do it quickly and without unnecessary headaches.

But do you really need this?

Before switching from macOS to Linux, it would be wise to consider if Linux is right for you in general. If you want to maintain synchronization with Apple Watch, make FaceTime calls, or work in iMovie, it’s best not to abandon macOS. These are proprietary products that exist within Apple’s closed ecosystem. If you love this ecosystem, Linux is likely not for you.

I was not very attached to the Apple ecosystem. I did not have an iPhone, and I didn't use iCloud, FaceTime, or Siri. I was interested in open source; I just needed to decide to take the first step.

Are there Linux versions of your favorite software?

I started exploring open source software back when I was using macOS and found that most of the applications I use work on both platforms.

For example, the Firefox browser works on both macOS and Linux. Did you use VLC for media playback? It will work on Linux too. Did you use Audacity for recording and editing audio? After switching to Linux, you can take it with you. Did you stream live on OBS Studio? There’s a version for Linux. Do you use the Telegram messenger? You can install Telegram for Linux.

This applies not only to open-source software. The developers of most (perhaps even all) of your favorite proprietary applications, not owned by Apple, have created versions for Linux: Spotify, Slack, Zoom, Steam, Discord, Skype, Chrome, and many others. Furthermore, almost everything you can run in your browser on macOS can work in your browser on Linux.

However, it's still best to double-check whether your favorite applications have Linux versions. Or perhaps there are adequate or even more interesting alternatives available. Do some research: type "your favorite application + Linux" or "your favorite application + Linux alternatives" into a search engine, or check out <noindex>Flathub</noindex> proprietary applications that you can install on Linux using Flatpak.

Don't rush to make Linux a "copy" of macOS.

To feel comfortable transitioning to Linux, you need to be sufficiently flexible and ready to learn the nuances of using a new operating system. For that, you should give yourself some time.

If you want Linux to look and work just like macOS, that's practically impossible. You can create a Linux desktop that resembles macOS, but in my opinion, the best way to transition to Linux is to start with a more standard GUI for Linux.

Give it a chance and use Linux as it was originally designed. Don't try to turn Linux into what it is not. And perhaps, like me, you'll find working in Linux much more enjoyable than in macOS.

Remember when you first sat down at a Mac: it took you some time to get used to it. So, with Linux, don't expect miracles either.

Choose the right Linux distribution.

Unlike Windows and macOS, there are very different operating systems built on Linux. I have used and tested several Linux distributions. I have also tried several desktops (or user GUIs). They differ greatly from each other in terms of aesthetics, usability, workflow, and built-in applications.

Although <noindex>ElementaryOS</noindex> and <noindex>Pop!_OS</noindex> often serve as alternatives to macOS, I recommend starting with <noindex>Fedora Workstation</noindex> for the following reasons:

It's easy to install on a USB drive using <noindex>Fedora Media Writer</noindex>.

It can recognize and work well with all your hardware right out of the box.

It supports the latest Linux software.

It launches the GNOME desktop environment without any additional setup.

It has a large community and a big team of developers.

In my opinion, <noindex>GNOME</noindex> it is the best desktop environment for Linux in terms of usability, consistency, flexibility, and ease of use for those migrating from macOS.

Fedora can be a great starting point for you, and once you get comfortable, you can try other distributions as well as desktop environments and window managers.

Get to know GNOME better

GNOME is set as the default desktop for Fedora and many other Linux distributions. Its recent update to <noindex>GNOME 3.36</noindex> has brought a modern aesthetic that Mac users will appreciate.

Be prepared for Linux, and even Fedora Workstation combined with GNOME, to be quite different from macOS. GNOME is very clean, minimalist, and modern. There are no distractions. There are no icons on the desktop, and no visible dock. Your windows don’t even have minimize and maximize buttons. But don’t panic. If you give it a chance, it may become the best and most productive operating system you've ever used.

When you launch GNOME, you see only the top panel and the wallpaper. The top panel includes the button Activities on the left, the time and date in the center, and system tray icons for network, Bluetooth, VPN, sound, brightness, battery charge (and so on) on the right side.

How GNOME resembles macOS

You will notice some similarities with macOS, such as window snapping and document previews with a space bar press (which works just like Quick Look).

If you click Activities on the top panel or press the Super key (similar to the Apple key) on the keyboard, a feature similar to macOS Mission Control and Spotlight Search will appear. This way, you can view information about all open applications and windows. On the left side, you will see a dock showcasing all your favorite (starred) applications.

At the top of the screen, there is a search box. As soon as you start typing, the focus shifts to it. This way, you can search through installed applications and file contents, find applications in the App Center, check the time and weather, and so on. It works just like Spotlight. Just start typing what you want to find and press Enter to open the application or file.

You can also see a list of all installed applications (just like Launchpad on Mac). Click on the icon Show Applications in the dock or use the keyboard shortcut Super + A.
Linux typically runs quite smoothly even on older hardware and takes up very little disk space compared to macOS. And unlike macOS, you can uninstall any pre-installed applications that you don’t need.

Customize GNOME for yourself

Look through GNOME settings to make changes that can make it more comfortable for you. Here are some things I do as soon as I install GNOME:

In Mouse & Touchpad I disable natural scrolling and enable click-to-click.

In Displays I enable night light, which makes the screen warmer in the evenings to prevent eye strain.

I also install <noindex>GNOME Tweaks</noindex>, to access additional settings.

In Tweaks, I enable over-amplification for sound to increase the volume above 100%.

In Tweaks, I also enable the Adwaita Dark theme, which I prefer over the default light theme.

Get familiar with the keyboard shortcuts

GNOME is keyboard-oriented, so try to use it more. In the Keyboard Shortcut section of GNOME settings, you can find a list of various shortcuts.

You can also add your own shortcuts. I’ve set my most frequently used applications to open with the Super key. For example, Super + B for my browser, Super + F for files, Super + T for the terminal, and so on. I also chose Ctrl + Q to close the current window.

I switch between open applications using Super + Tab. And I use Super + H to hide the window. I press F11 to open an application in full-screen mode. Super + left arrow allows me to snap the current application to the left side of the screen. Super + right arrow allows me to snap it to the right side of the screen. And so on.

Run Linux in test mode

You can try working in Fedora on your Mac before fully installing it. Just download the ISO image file from <noindex>the Fedora website</noindex>. Mount the ISO image file onto a USB drive using <noindex>Etcher.</noindex>, and boot from that drive by pressing the Option key when starting your computer, so you can try the OS live.

Now you can explore Fedora Workstation without installing anything extra on your Mac. Check how this OS interacts with your hardware and network: can you connect to WiFi? Does the touchpad work? How about audio? And so on.

Also, spend some time exploring GNOME. Check out the various features I described above. Open some of the installed applications. If everything looks good, and you like the appearance of Fedora Workstation and GNOME, you can proceed with a full installation on your Mac.

Welcome to the world of
