Google and Canonical have proposed<\/a><\/noindex> a joint initiative to support the development of graphical applications based on the Flutter<\/a><\/noindex> framework for desktop Linux systems. The Flutter user interface framework is written<\/a><\/noindex> is written in Dart (a runtime engine for executing applications is written<\/a><\/noindex> in C++), allowing for the creation of universal applications that work across different platforms, and is seen as an alternative to React Native.<\/p>\n

For rendering the interface in Linux a layer<\/a><\/noindex> there is a wrapper based on the GTK library (support for Qt and other toolkits is promised to be added later). In addition to Dart, the native language for Flutter used to create widgets, applications can leverage the Dart Foreign Function Interface to call code written in C\/C++ and access all the capabilities of the Linux platform. <\/p>\n

Support for Linux app development has been offered in the latest alpha release of the Flutter SDK<\/a><\/noindex>, which also includes the ability to publish Linux applications in the Snap Store. A build of the Flutter SDK<\/a><\/noindex>can also be found in snap format. <\/p>\n

For developing Flutter-based applications, it is recommended to use either the Visual Studio Code editor or the IntelliJ and Android Studio development environments. As an example of Linux programs based on Flutter, the application<\/a><\/noindex> Flokk Contacts is provided for working with the Google Contacts address book. Three Flutter plugins with Linux support have been published in the<\/a><\/noindex> pub.dev repository:<\/a><\/noindex> url_launcher for opening URLs in the default browser,<\/a><\/noindex> shared_preferences for saving settings between sessions, and<\/a><\/noindex> path_provider<\/p>\n
