Approached<\/a><\/noindex> the end of the support period<\/a><\/noindex> for the LTS branch of the Debian 8 Jessie distribution, formed<\/a><\/noindex> in 2015. The release of updates for the LTS branch was carried out by a separate group of developers LTS Team<\/a><\/noindex>, made up of enthusiasts and representatives of companies interested in long-term provision of updates for Debian. <\/p>\n

The initiative group has already begun to form a new LTS branch based on Debian 9 \"Stretch\"<\/a><\/noindex>, the standard support for which ends on July 18, 2020. The LTS Team takes over from the Security Team and will continue support without interruption. Updates for Debian 9 will be extended until June 30, 2022 (later, LTS support will be provided for Debian 10, with updates released until 2024). Like for Debian 8, LTS support for Debian 9 and Debian 10 will only cover architectures i386, amd64, armel, and armhf, with a total support duration of 5 years. <\/p>\n

The end of LTS support does not mean the end of the Debian 8.0 lifecycle yet \u2014 as part of the extended programExtended LTS<\/a><\/noindex>Freexian has expressed its willingness to continue releasing updates that address vulnerabilities in a limited set of packages for amd64, armel, and i386 architectures until June 30, 2022. Support will not cover packages such as the Linux kernel 3.16 (kernel 4.9 will be offered, backported from Debian 9 'Stretch'), openjdk-7 (openjdk-8 will be offered), mariadb-10.0, libav, and tomcat7 (support will last until March 2021). Updates are distributed through external repository<\/a><\/noindex>, supported by Freexian. Access free<\/a><\/noindex> is available to everyone, and the range of supported packages depends on the total number of sponsors<\/a><\/noindex> and the packages of interest to them. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that the unpredictable and short support duration of Debian, which averaged three years and depended on the activity of new release development, was one of the main barriers to the adoption of Debian in enterprises. With the introduction of LTS and Extended LTS initiatives, this obstacle has been removed, extending Debian's support time to seven years from the release date, which is longer than the five-year LTS releases of Ubuntu but three years shorter than Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise, which are supported for 10 years.<\/p>\n
