Linus Torvalds connected<\/a><\/noindex> to the discussion capabilities<\/a><\/noindex> of adding tools for Rust programming language support to the Linux kernel. Josh Triplett from Intel, who is working on project<\/a><\/noindex> bringing the Rust language up to parity with C in the field of systems programming, proposed<\/a><\/noindex> In the initial phase, add an option to Kconfig for supporting Rust that would not result in including Rust compiler dependencies when building in the 'make allnoconfig' and 'make allyesconfig' modes, allowing for more freedom to experiment with Rust code. A similar trick was implemented in adding<\/a><\/noindex> experimental support for building with Clang in link-time optimization mode (LTO), after which it is planned to add support<\/a><\/noindex> builds with command execution flow protection (CFI<\/a><\/noindex>, Control-Flow Integrity).<\/p>\n

Linus disagreed and expressed concern that initial Rust support would not be tested for builds and risk getting mired in a situation where a small group of developers interested in the project checks the code only under their specific conditions and adds incorrect things, as they remain hidden and do not surface during kernel testing in other environments. <\/p>\n

According to Linus, the first Rust driver should be proposed in a simple format where failures are evident and easy to detect. To simplify testing, he recommended following the approach used for checking C compiler versions and supported flags\u2014check for the presence of the Rust compiler in the system and include its support if it is installed. <\/p>\n
