As an experiment, the project Silica<\/a><\/noindex> has preserved the contents of the 6000 most popular GitHub repositories in long-term storage devices based on quartz glass plates. Data is preserved by physically altering the properties of the material, which is impervious to electromagnetic radiation, water, and heat, allowing for preservation times in the tens of thousands of years.<\/p>\n

The project \"Internet Archive<\/a><\/noindex>\" preserved a snapshot of public repositories from GitHub as of April 13. In total, about 55 TB<\/a><\/noindex> information about the repositories, including comments, issues, and other metadata. In the future, the creators of the Internet Archive plan to provide the ability to retrieve project code from the archive using the command \"git clone\" (an equivalent of the service is being developed. Organization Software Heritage Foundation<\/a><\/noindex>, founded by the national research institute of France (Inria) with the support of UNESCO, aims to accumulate and preserve source texts. Currently, the Software Heritage archive<\/a><\/noindex> contains 130 million projects and includes the complete history of their development. 100 million of these projects have been imported from GitHub.
