Eleven years ago the specifications<\/a><\/noindex> for SATA Revision 3.0 were released, allowing the peak speed of one of the most common interfaces for connecting hard drives to double. And today, the SATA specification revision has reached<\/a><\/noindex> version 3.5. The maximum transfer speed remains unchanged at 6 Gbit\/s. However, the standard developers promise to increase overall performance and improve integration with other I\/O standards.<\/p>\n

The main innovations in SATA Revision 3.5 boil down to three additional features. First, there's the Device Transmit Emphasis for Gen 3 PHY technical feature. It allows the focus to be on the transmitting device, leveling SATA with other I\/O solutions in terms of performance metrics. This feature should assist in testing and integrating new device interfaces.<\/p>\n

Secondly, the SATA specifications introduced the Defined Ordered NCQ Commands functionality. This allows the host to specify relationships between commands in the queue and establishes the order in which these commands are processed.<\/p>\n

The third new extension in SATA Revision 3.5 is the Command Duration Limit Features. This function aims to reduce latency by allowing the host to define service quality categories through more detailed control over command properties. Additionally, this feature helps align SATA with the 'Fast Fail' requirements set by the Open Compute Project (OCP) and outlined in the Technical Committee standard INCITS T13. Accordingly, the new revision of SATA incorporates all the latest updates from the T13 standard.<\/p>\n

Finally, the SATA Revision 3.5 specifications included corrections and clarifications of the SATA 3.4 specifications.<\/p>\n

It is expected that the optimization of command processing and error correction in the new version SATA Revision 3.5 will help reduce the occurrence of 'bottlenecks' during intensive data transfers over the SATA interface, which is certainly welcome.<\/p>\n
